The Atlanta Vibe were right there Thursday night, but a late push by the Dallas Pulse proved to be the difference as Atlanta dropped a hard-fought five-set match, 3–2, at home.
For the third straight match, the Vibe were pushed to the limit and once again showed they can trade punches with anyone in the league. Atlanta carried a 2–1 edge after three sets, but Dallas steadied its attack and claimed the final two frames to pull out the win.
“It was disappointing. We’re better than what we showed, and Dallas is a really good team,” Head Coach Kayla Banwarth said. “We were too up and down, and that makes it hard to win in this league.”
Atlanta opened strong with a 25–20 first-set win behind eight kills from outside hitter Leah Edmond and steady distribution from setter Maddie Waak, who recorded 16 assists in the frame. Dallas responded with a 25–22 second set to even the match.
The Vibe regained control in the third set, earning a 25–22 win fueled by opposite hitter Aiko Jones, who added timely offense and defensive presence. Jones finished the night with a season-high 15 kills while continuing to grow into a more aggressive role.
“Once I swung hard and saw it work, I just kept going,” Jones said. “It helps when your teammates are telling you to take that swing.”
Dallas regained momentum in the fourth set with a 25–20 win and closed out the match in the fifth, 15–9. The Pulse leaned on the outside hitter duo of Mimi Colyer and Sofia Maldonado Diaz, who combined for 41 kills.
Despite the result, Banwarth emphasized the long-term value of these five-set battles and the thin margins the Vibe continue to navigate.
“These matches are great experience,” Banwarth said. “When it gets tight, we have to find our edge and execute.”
Atlanta now turns its attention to the road, traveling to Columbus for its next matchup on Sunday, January 25.
