The Atlanta Falcons delivered another prime-time statement Monday night, edging the Los Angeles Rams 27–24 behind a historic performance from Bijan Robinson and a stifling defensive effort at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Atlanta continued its remarkable success in the franchise’s throwback uniforms, improving to 16-3 in the look dating back to 2009. The win also pushed the Falcons to 4-1 in prime-time games this season, tying a franchise record previously set in 2012 and 2017. Defensively, the Falcons set the tone early, holding the Rams scoreless in the first half — the first time Atlanta has shut out an opponent in the opening half since Week 9 of the 2021 season against New Orleans. They remain the only team this year to keep the Rams off the scoreboard in any half.
The defense continued to make history up front as EDGE James Pearce Jr. and defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus each reached 8.5 sacks on the season. It marks the first time since 2004 that two Falcons defenders have recorded at least 8.5 sacks in a single season, joining Patrick Kerney and Rod Coleman as the last duo to accomplish the feat.
Offensively, the night belonged to Robinson. The third-year running back turned in one of the most dominant performances in franchise history, totaling 229 scrimmage yards — 195 on the ground and 34 through the air. In the process, Robinson broke Atlanta’s single-season scrimmage yards record with 2,255, surpassing William Andrews’ long-standing mark of 2,176 set in 1983.
Robinson’s record-setting night included a jaw-dropping 93-yard touchdown run, the longest rush in Falcons history and the longest run by any player in the NFL this season. It was also the first 90-plus-yard run by an Atlanta running back since Warrick Dunn’s 90-yard sprint against the Giants in 2006. Robinson finished with a career-high 195 rushing yards, the most by a Falcon since Michael Turner ran for 208 yards in 2008 — coincidentally, also against the Rams.
With the performance, Robinson passed Christian McCaffrey for the most career scrimmage yards by a player under the age of 24 in NFL history, now sitting at 5,605. He also became the only player in league history to post at least 1,400 rushing yards and 810 receiving yards in a single season. Monday marked his 29th career game with 100-plus scrimmage yards since entering the league in 2023 — the most in the NFL over that span — and his fifth game this season with at least 175 scrimmage yards, three more than any other player.
Kirk Cousins managed the game efficiently, completing 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown while posting a 99.2 passer rating. Cousins avoided mistakes and made timely throws to complement the ground attack as Atlanta leaned on its physical identity.
The Falcons’ secondary provided key momentum swings throughout the night. Safety Jessie Bates delivered one of the game’s biggest plays, intercepting a pass and returning it 34 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. It was Bates’ fourth career pick-six — his third with Atlanta — making him the fourth Falcon to record at least three interception returns for touchdowns, joining Deion Jones, Kevin Mathis and Deion Sanders. Bates is also the only player in the NFL to record a pick-six in each of the last three seasons.
Rookie safety Xavier Watts added to the takeaway party with two interceptions, giving him four and five on the season. Watts now leads all rookies in interceptions and became the first Falcons rookie since Michael Booker in 1997 to record two picks in a game. With five interceptions, he’s also the first Atlanta rookie since Deion Sanders in 1989 to reach that total in a season.
Up front, veteran EDGE Leonard Floyd recorded his 70th career sack in the third quarter, joining an exclusive group of just 18 active players with at least 70 career sacks. Dorlus added another sack early in the second half, extending his streak to three straight games with at least a half sack and cementing his career-high 8.5 sacks this season — second among all interior defensive linemen league-wide and first in the NFC.
Linebacker Divine Deablo led all defenders with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops, marking his first double-digit tackle performance of the season. On special teams, punter Bradley Pinion set a new franchise record with 32 punts downed inside the 20 this season, breaking Michael Koenen’s record from 2007.
Zane Gonzalez put the finishing touches on the win, drilling a 56-yard field goal — one yard shy of his career long — before calmly knocking through the go-ahead 43-yard kick with just 25 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
The Falcons now turn their attention to the regular-season finale, returning home to face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, January 4, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. As Atlanta looks to close the season on a high note, Monday night served as another reminder of what this group can be when all three phases are clicking — and when Bijan Robinson is doing things no Falcon has ever done before.
