Atlanta United Add Versatile Defender Tomás Jacob on Long-Term Deal

Atlanta United continues to invest in its future, announcing the signing of defender Tomás Jacob from Liga MX side Club Necaxa to a contract through the 2028-29 season, with option years that extend through 2030-31. Jacob will occupy a U-22 Initiative and international roster spot, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.

At just 21 years old, Jacob already brings meaningful first-division experience and positional flexibility—two qualities Atlanta clearly values as it reshapes its roster under Tata Martino. Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson highlighted exactly that.

“Tomás is a talented young player with the versatility to play in multiple positions,” Henderson said. “He’s going to add competition to the backline and is well suited for Tata’s style of play.”

A native of Santa Fe, Argentina, Jacob developed in the Newell’s Old Boys academy and worked his way to a first-division debut against Independiente on Oct. 31, 2021. He made 14 league appearances during the 2022 season, registering his first professional assist later that year against Godoy Cruz. Over the next two seasons, Jacob continued to earn minutes at the top level, logging appearances as a right back, center back, and even in central midfield—showcasing the adaptability that makes him an intriguing long-term piece.

Jacob’s career path took another step forward in July 2025 when he transferred to Club Necaxa. He made his club debut just three days later and quickly established himself as a regular contributor, starting 12 of his 14 league appearances during the Apertura season. He scored his first professional goal on Sept. 26 against Atlas and started all three of Necaxa’s Leagues Cup matches, including a notable appearance against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Now, Jacob arrives in Atlanta with 67 combined first-division appearances across Argentina and Mexico—impressive mileage for a player still early in his career. Standing at 6-foot-2, he adds size, versatility, and competition to a backline that continues to evolve this offseason.
