The Atlanta Falcons received difficult news on Monday, announcing that rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered a left-knee injury during Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers. The team is still working through the complete medical evaluation to determine the full severity of the injury, but the early timeline is clear: Penix will be placed on the reserve/injured list, sidelining him for a minimum of four games.
Penix was off to an efficient start against Carolina, completing 91.7% of his passes in the first half before his action stalled in the second and he exited following a scramble. His absence shifted the momentum of the offense and ultimately the outcome of the game, which Atlanta lost in overtime, 30-27.
With Penix officially heading to injured reserve, the Falcons confirmed that Kirk Cousins will assume the starting quarterback role moving forward. Cousins stepped in during Sunday’s game and led multiple key drives, including the late push that set up the game-tying field goal in the fourth quarter.
This marks a significant transition for a Falcons team already navigating a tight division race and searching for consistency. The timetable for Penix’s return remains uncertain, and Atlanta will rely heavily on Cousins’ experience as they enter a critical stretch of the season.
The Falcons face back-to-back road games against the New Orleans Saints (Nov. 23) and New York Jets (Nov. 30) before returning home to host the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 7.
Atlanta now turns the page, recalibrating with Cousins at the helm as they push through the next month without their rookie signal-caller.
