The Atlanta Falcons bounced back in a big way on Sunday, defeating the Washington Commanders, 34-27, in front of the home crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta’s offense exploded for 435 total yards — 128 on the ground and 307 through the air — while finding the end zone four times.
Atlanta’s defense set the tone early, registering two first-half sacks, which brought their total to eight through the first half of games this season. That mark tied the New York Giants for the most in the league through Sunday’s slate. Overall, the Falcons now have 10 sacks through four games, their highest total to open a season since 2017.
Special teams also made noise with two opponent muffed punts, bringing the Falcons’ season total to four — the second most in a single season in franchise history.
Drake London, Kyle Pitts Sr., Bijan Robinson, and Tyler Allgeier all scored touchdowns, marking the first time since Week 6 of the 2024 season that four different Falcons found the end zone in the same game.
London and Robinson made history of their own, becoming the first RB/WR duo in the NFL to each record 100 receiving yards in a game since Tampa Bay’s Jacquizz Rodgers and Chris Godwin in 2018 — also against Washington. They were also the first Falcons RB/WR duo to do so since Alfred Jackson and William Andrews back in 1981.
Michael Penix Jr. turned in the best game of his young career, completing 20-of-26 passes for a career-high 313 yards and two touchdowns. He joined Matt Ryan as the only Falcons quarterbacks to post 300+ passing yards, a 75% completion rate, and two touchdowns in a single game.
Robinson continued to shine, racking up a career-high 181 scrimmage yards (106 receiving, 75 rushing), including a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. With that score, he became the second-fastest Falcon to reach 25 career scrimmage touchdowns. His performance also gave him 22 career games with 100+ scrimmage yards — the most in the NFL since 2023.
London hauled in eight receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown, while Pitts chipped in 70 yards and a score on five catches. Allgeier added a 15-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, giving him his second score of the season.
On defense, Zach Harrison, Kaden Elliss, and Leonard Floyd each got in on the sack action, while Xavier Watts grabbed his second interception of the season. Jessie Bates led the team with seven tackles, and Dee Alford forced a fumble in the second quarter.
Kicker Parker Romo was steady, converting both of his field goal attempts (38, 26) and all four extra points.
Atlanta escaped with a 34-27 victory and improved to 3-1 on the season. Now sitting at 3-1, Atlanta looks to keep the momentum rolling when the team returns to the Benz for some Monday Night Football, taking on Josh Allen and his Buffalo Bills squad on October 13. Kickoff is at 7:15 PM.
