Lagerwey Takes Indefinite Leave to Focus on Treatment

Atlanta United announced today that President and CEO Garth Lagerwey will take an immediate and indefinite leave of absence from the club as he focuses fully on his ongoing medical treatment and recovery. The club and AMB Sports & Entertainment (AMBSE) made it clear that Lagerwey has their full support during this time.

Day-to-day operations of the club will continue under Chief Soccer Officer Chris Henderson, SVP of Strategy Dimitrios Efstathiou, and Chief Business Officer Sarah Kate Noftsinger. The trio will oversee team and club decisions moving forward, continuing to report directly to AMBSE CEO Rich McKay to ensure continuity.

Lagerwey addressed the decision in a public statement, acknowledging the commitment required to lead Atlanta United and the importance of stepping away while prioritizing his health.

“I am mindful that leadership of Atlanta United requires full-time attention, and right now I simply must focus on my health and ongoing cancer treatment. I am appreciative of the club considering my health needs during such a challenging time, and I am also encouraged by my treatment progress and long-term outlook,” said Lagerwey.

One of the most respected executives in American soccer, Lagerwey has played a major role in shaping the club’s long-term vision and ambition. His leave comes at a pivotal moment for Atlanta United, but the organization emphasized its support system and its unified approach during his absence.
