Atlanta United Surrenders Two-Goal Lead in Crushing 3-2 Loss

Atlanta United was minutes away from securing one of its most impressive road victories of the season.

Instead, the Five Stripes walked away stunned.

Atlanta fell 3-2 to the Philadelphia Union Saturday night at Subaru Park after conceding two goals deep into second-half stoppage time.

The loss was especially painful because Atlanta played more than 65 minutes with 10 men, built a two-goal lead and still could not close out the result.

Miguel Almirón and Tristan Muyumba scored for the Five Stripes, but Philadelphia completed a dramatic comeback in the final moments to claim all three points.

The match began with both sides struggling to create clear scoring opportunities.

That changed in the 25th minute when Atlanta defender Enea Mihaj received a straight red card for a foul near midfield.

Playing down a man on the road usually forces a team into survival mode.

Atlanta responded by scoring.

Just minutes after the red card, Alexey Miranchuk headed the ball forward near midfield, where Fafa Picault delivered a one-touch pass over Philadelphia’s back line.

Almirón raced onto the ball, fought through pressure from two Union defenders and beat goalkeeper Andre Blake to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead.

It was another big moment for Almirón, who continues to provide Atlanta with energy and production in the attack.

Philadelphia pushed for an equalizer before halftime and created several dangerous opportunities, but Lucas Hoyos stood tall in goal.

His biggest save came against Cavan Sullivan during first-half stoppage time, helping Atlanta carry its one-goal advantage into the break.

The Union continued to apply pressure at the start of the second half, but Atlanta stayed organized and found another breakthrough in the 66th minute.

The play began with Atlanta pressing high in Philadelphia’s half and forcing a turnover.

Júnior Alonso found Miranchuk in a tight area, and the midfielder turned away from a defender before finding Muyumba in space.

Muyumba dribbled into an open pocket near the edge of the box and curled a beautiful shot past Blake to give Atlanta a surprising 2-0 lead.

At that point, the Five Stripes appeared to be in control despite playing with 10 men.

But Philadelphia responded quickly.

In the 73rd minute, a cross from the left side took a slight deflection off Matt Edwards and fell to Milan Iloski, who flicked the ball past Hoyos to cut Atlanta’s lead to 2-1.

From there, the pressure continued to build.

Atlanta defended wave after wave of Philadelphia attacks and appeared close to escaping Subaru Park with a hard-earned victory.

Then came stoppage time.

Neil Pierre scored the equalizer deep into added time, erasing Atlanta’s lead and putting the Union in position to steal the match.

Moments later, Ezekiel Alladoh completed the comeback with another stoppage-time goal, giving Philadelphia a stunning 3-2 victory.

For Atlanta, this one will hurt.

The Five Stripes showed resilience after going down a man.

They created two excellent goals.

They received a strong performance from Hoyos.

And they were only moments away from earning three points against one of the toughest teams in the Eastern Conference.

But once again, Atlanta was unable to finish the job.

The loss drops Atlanta United to 3-12-3 with 12 points.

The Five Stripes now return home on Saturday, August 15, when they face the New York Red Bulls at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

Atlanta proved Saturday night that it can compete under difficult circumstances.

Now the challenge is learning how to protect a lead, manage the final moments and turn strong performances into results.

Because being close is not enough.

Not when the points keep slipping away.
