Late Goal Sinks Atlanta United in 1-0 Loss to Nashville

Atlanta United returned from the 2026 FIFA World Cup break Friday night but came away empty-handed, falling 1-0 to Nashville SC after conceding a late second-half goal.

The Five Stripes controlled much of the match and created the better opportunities, but Nashville capitalized on one of its few clear chances to secure all three points.

Atlanta started aggressively and produced the first dangerous moment in the eighth minute. Jay Fortune collected the ball in his own half, dribbled past two Nashville defenders and carried possession into the attacking third. He then found Miguel Almirón on the left wing, where the midfielder took a touch and fired from a tight angle toward the near post. Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake made the save.

Atlanta was forced into an early substitution just minutes later when Fortune suffered an injury and was replaced by Will Reilly.

Neither team generated many clear scoring opportunities during the remainder of the opening half. Nashville’s best chance came on a Daniel Lovitz header following a corner kick, while Enea Mihaj had an attempt saved from a set piece late in the half. The teams entered halftime scoreless.

Atlanta again came out on the front foot after the break. In the 51st minute, a strong passing sequence involving Alexey Miranchuk, Tristan Muyumba and Elías Báez created space inside the box. Miranchuk turned and laid the ball off for Luke Brennan, but a Nashville defender blocked Brennan’s first-time effort at the final moment.

Brennan came even closer a few minutes later. Almirón found Miranchuk with a low diagonal pass near the top of the box, and Miranchuk turned his defender before threading a perfectly weighted ball into Brennan’s path. The Homegrown winger got behind the defense and fired a left-footed shot on target, but Schwake pushed the attempt over the crossbar.

Despite Atlanta’s pressure, Nashville found the breakthrough in the 79th minute. Alex Muyl received the ball in space on the left wing and delivered a floating cross into the center of the box. Shakur Mohammed rose to meet it and directed a header into the left side of the goal, giving Nashville the 1-0 lead.

Atlanta was unable to find an equalizer in the closing minutes and suffered its 10th loss of the season.

Atlanta United moves to 3-10-2 with 11 points and returns to action Wednesday, July 22, when it travels to Bank of America Stadium to face Charlotte FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET.
