It was one of those nights where the game felt within reach — until it wasn’t.
Atlanta United dropped a 2–0 result to Nashville SC Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with both goals coming in the second half. The scoreline doesn’t tell the full story, though. Atlanta had moments, had chances, and had stretches where it looked like the breakthrough was coming — it just never arrived.
Lucas Hoyos was one of the bright spots, turning in a season-high six saves to keep Atlanta in it as long as possible. On the other end, Alexey Miranchuk wore the captain’s armband for the first time in an MLS regular season match — a notable moment in a game that ultimately slipped away.
The first half played out exactly how you’d expect between two teams trying to find rhythm — tight, physical, and short on clear chances.
Atlanta’s best look came in the 21st minute when Cooper Sanchez found space at the top of the box, but his shot was handled. Nashville’s biggest threat came late in the half, and that’s where Hoyos stepped up. First, he denied Hany Mukhtar one-on-one with a strong leg save during a counterattack. Then, just moments later, he reacted again — diving to stop a curling free kick headed toward the near post. It kept things level going into halftime, and at that point, it felt like Atlanta had weathered the toughest stretch.
Out of the break, Atlanta came out with intent.
Jay Fortune nearly broke things open in the 57th minute, driving forward and getting a shot off from distance, but Brian Schwake came up with the save. It felt like a warning sign — but Nashville answered instead.
Just five minutes later, a turnover in midfield turned into a quick counter, and Mukhtar once again was at the center of it. He pushed forward and found Cristian Espinoza, who finished low into the far corner to give Nashville the lead.
Atlanta kept pushing.
In the 78th minute, pressure high up the field created another opportunity. Latte Lath forced a mistake and slipped the ball to Miranchuk, who got a clean look at goal — but Schwake came up big again to deny the equalizer.
From there, Atlanta committed numbers forward searching for a way back in. But as often happens in those moments, it left space behind.
Nashville took advantage in stoppage time. Mukhtar led one more counterattack, setting up Shakur Mohammad for the finish that sealed the 2–0 result.
It’s a frustrating one for Atlanta — not for lack of effort, but for the small moments that didn’t fall their way.
Atlanta United (1-6-1, 4 points) returns to action Wednesday, April 22 when it hosts New England Revolution at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET), looking to turn performances into points before the early stretch turns into a deeper hole.
