Dream Make a Statement: Atlanta Lands Angel Reese in Blockbuster Deal

The Atlanta Dream just made it clear — they’re not satisfied with being good. They’re going all in.

Atlanta has acquired two-time WNBA All-Star Angel Reese from the Chicago Sky in exchange for first-round picks in 2027 and 2028. The deal also includes a 2028 second-round pick swap, adding another layer to what is already a bold move by the front office.

And make no mistake — this is a franchise-shifting move.

Reese arrives in Atlanta as one of the most electrifying young stars in the league, bringing not just production, but presence. She’s a player who changes the tone of a game the moment she steps on the floor — relentless on the glass, physical in the paint, and fueled by a competitive fire that doesn’t turn off.

For a team coming off a historic 2025 season under first-year head coach Karl Smesko, this isn’t about adding talent — it’s about elevating expectations.

“Angel is a dynamic talent and a perfect fit for what we are building in Atlanta,” said general manager Dan Padover. “She has already proven herself as one of the most impactful players in the league, and her competitiveness, production and drive to win align seamlessly with our vision.”

Reese’s résumé already speaks volumes.

She led LSU to a national championship in 2023, earning Most Outstanding Player honors, and has carried that dominance into the WNBA. In just two seasons, she’s posted 49 double-doubles while averaging 14.0 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

That kind of consistency — especially on the boards — is rare.

She set rookie records for rebounds per game (13.1) and consecutive double-doubles (15), earning All-Rookie Team honors in 2024. Even more impressive, she’s the only player in league history to average at least 12 rebounds per game in a season — and she’s done it in both of her first two years.

That’s not just production. That’s historic.

In 2025, Reese led the league in rebounding and earned Peak Performer honors, continuing to prove she’s one of the most dominant forces in the paint. Her motor doesn’t stop. Her physicality wears teams down. And her consistency makes her a nightly problem.

“I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to join the Atlanta Dream organization,” Reese said. “I’m focused on continuing to grow my game, competing at the highest level, connecting with the fans, and giving everything I’ve got to the Dream.”

And the fit? It makes sense.

Atlanta is coming off a 30-win season — the best in franchise history — with a system that thrives on efficiency, spacing, and player development. Under Smesko, the Dream went from last in offensive rating in 2024 to second in 2025.

Now, they add one of the best rebounders in the game to a roster that already features elite perimeter talent.

“Angel’s ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor is elite,” Smesko said. “Her energy, toughness and instincts will thrive in our system, and we’re excited to integrate her into the style of play we are constructing here in Atlanta.”

This move also builds on a roster that saw major individual growth last season. Allisha Gray finished fourth in MVP voting. Rhyne Howard continued her rise, becoming the fastest player in league history to reach 300 career three-pointers. Naz Hillmon earned Sixth Player of the Year honors, and Brionna Jones added All-Star recognition while doubling her career double-doubles in her first season with the team.

Now add Reese to that mix — and suddenly, Atlanta isn’t just a playoff team.

They’re a problem.

The Dream will open the 2026 season at home on May 17 against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces at State Farm Arena. And with this move, expectations won’t just be high — they’ll be real.

Atlanta didn’t just make a trade.

They made a statement.
