71,492 fans packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium as the Atlanta Falcons returned home, looking to shake off the sting of last week’s 30-0 loss to the Panthers. From the opening drive, it was clear this team was determined to regain momentum.
Atlanta’s offense wasted little time setting the tone. Michael Penix Jr. connected with Drake London on a five-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, capping a balanced drive that featured Bijan Robinson powering through on the ground and Kyle Pitts making a big 26-yard catch earlier in the series. Special teams contributed as well, with kicker Parker Romo knocking through a 38-yard field goal after an earlier Robinson fumble recovery by Penix kept the drive alive.
Robinson played with urgency, churning out key runs to sustain drives, while Tyler Allgeier excelled in short-yardage situations. London continued to be a reliable target for Penix, hauling in multiple first-down catches before finishing off Atlanta’s second scoring drive with a touchdown.
Defensively, the Falcons were stout early. Edge rusher Zach Harrison notched a sack on Marcus Mariota, and Atlanta’s front forced Washington into stalled possessions and punts. Even when Chris Rodriguez broke a 48-yard run late in the first, the defense limited further damage. By the end of the opening quarter, Atlanta led 10-0, a sharp contrast to their struggles in Carolina.
The second quarter featured a back-and-forth battle. Washington struck first with a 63-yard, 5-play drive capped by Mariota’s short touchdown pass to McCaffrey, briefly taking a 7-3 lead. Atlanta responded quickly, with Robinson powering in a 14-yard rushing touchdown and Penix connecting on a 43-yard pass to London, regaining the lead. Mistakes by Washington, including muffed punts and a fumble, also helped Atlanta maintain momentum.
Special teams again played a role, with Pinion’s punts flipping field position and long returns from McCaffrey and McCloud keeping drives alive. Washington converted a 43-yard field goal from Matt Gay before halftime, narrowing the deficit. At the break, Atlanta led 17-10. Mariota had shown mobility and accuracy on multiple scoring drives, while Penix displayed big-play ability. Atlanta controlled time of possession with a balanced attack, and Washington’s miscues contributed to the Falcons’ advantage.
The third quarter was high-scoring and fast-paced. Washington opened with a methodical drive, featuring short completions from Mariota and solid runs from Jacory Croskey-Merritt, setting up a 43-yard field goal from Gay. Atlanta responded with big plays of its own, including a 69-yard pass from Penix to Robinson that set up Allgeier’s 15-yard rushing touchdown.
Washington countered with efficient passing and scrambling from Mariota, highlighted by a 32-yard connection to Jaylin Lane and short gains from McCaffrey, culminating in another touchdown and extra point. Atlanta extended its lead with a short touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts, capitalizing on Washington turnovers, including a key interception by Xavier Watts. By the end of the third, Atlanta led 31-16, converting big plays and taking advantage of Washington mistakes.
The fourth quarter saw Atlanta maintain control while Washington mounted a late comeback attempt. Penix managed the clock efficiently with kneel-downs, and Allgeier contributed key short runs. Romo added a 26-yard field goal, keeping the Falcons ahead.
Washington responded with a furious drive, including a 24-yard touchdown pass from Mariota to Deebo Samuel Sr. and a successful two-point conversion to Zach Ertz, cutting the deficit to 34-27. Despite the late pressure, Atlanta’s defense held firm, and a well-executed onside kick recovery allowed the Falcons to close out the game.
Atlanta escaped with a 34-27 victory and will look to build on this momentum when they take on the Buffalo Bills on October 13 at home, kickoff is at 7:15 PM.
