Great Weekend for Football in Atlanta

In what would seem like a Deja Vu moment from the Peach Bowl with seconds remaining, a missed 50 yard field goal attempt by Buckeyes Noah Ruggles resulted in Georgia defending its national championship on Saturday at the Mercedes Benz in the college football semifinal sending Georgia to LA to face TSU in next Saturday.

Less than 24 hours later on New Years Day in front of a crowd of 69,000 plus fans in week 17 of the NFL the Falcons defeated the Cardinals.

“We’ve been in some of these close games with a young football team in some critical spots. These opportunities to grow and to execute in those moments, it was cool to see.” said coach Arthur Smith.

Here’s what happened:

It was in the 2nd quarter that rookie Tyler Allgeier scored a 5 yard touchdown to help give Atlanta a 7-3 lead.

Then Cardinals Trey Mcbride scored 4 yard touchdown to capture the lead again.

CP scored a touchdown to help put Atlanta back on top.

At the half the Falcons was up by one.

After the the third quarter the Falcons trailed by 2 points.

In the final seconds Younghoe Koo kicked the game-winning field goal, marking the first win for the former Cincinnati standout rookie QB Desmond Ridder’s NFL career.

With the win the Falcons’ four-game losing streak was snapped. The team improved to 6–10 on the year. The dirty birds had been eliminated from playoff contention before Sunday’s game against the Arizona.

Tyler Allgeier transcended 1,000 all-purpose yards for the season and finished with 83 rushing yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

“Desmond, the third down pass to Pruitt, the situation there, big-time play by him. That was a tight window throw. Have to have it.” Smith stated. “Then Tyler, the offense executing in that situation right there, knowing when to go down. Smart football player, and it allowed us to play that situation and walk off with the field goal win.”

Up Next-Week 18: Atlanta will try to end the regular season with momentum when the dirty birds face Tom Brady and the Buccaneers for the season finale this Sunday at the Mercedes Benz.
