Dream host basketball clinic on National Girls and Women in Sports Day

It was a fun filled, high energy evening when the Atlanta Dream hosted a free Clinic at the Tracey Wyatt Recreation Complex on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Wednesday Feb 2. 2020.

The participants learned the basic essentials of the game of basketball by training like the pro’s with a series of basketball drills led by Atlanta Dream Head Coach Nicki Collen, Atlanta Dream Assistant Coach Darius Taylor; Atlanta Dream guard Renee Montgomery, Nike Game Growers winners Dailey Jefferson and Sierra Sims; along with other experienced basketball skill development coaches.

“What a great turnout. I mean really, a great facility. Anytime you can have wood floors and that many baskets, that many kids,” said Nicki Collen. “They got the most out of their experience. Much as anything just getting them in, them being active, that’s what we want them to stay in sports whether it’s basketball or something else.”

Assistant coach Darius Taylor spoke on his favorite part of the clinic. “It was so many. I think the young ladies showed a lot of energy, look like they was interested in basketball. It’s always good to see when you have a clinic like this how many people show up. The fact that they showed up really show they have a true interest in basketball. Hopefully that continues beyond where they are now, but I enjoyed every bit of it. My station was a defense station. I am a defense person. I like to see the kids have fun and enjoy the sport, and like I said hopefully those young ladies will continue to play and support basketball.”

The clinic also had a dance contest. Renee Montgomery spoke on the energy of the kids. “You know we had a dance contest. A couple of them was shy but a couple of them did their thing. It was fun. It was great energy. I love when the kids are messing up but don’t care. So sometimes you know they are a little embarrassed but today everybody was messing up. They kept going and it was exciting.”

The Atlanta Dream will tip-off their 13th season in the WNBA in May 2020. The team will play its home games at the new Gateway Center Arena @ College Park.
