Dream Add Championship Pedigree With DeWanna Bonner Signing

The Atlanta Dream added some serious championship experience to the roster, signing two-time WNBA champion and six-time All-Star DeWanna Bonner to a rest-of-season contract, the organization announced Thursday.

Bonner joins an Atlanta team that has already clinched its fourth consecutive WNBA Playoffs berth and continues to position itself for a deep postseason run.

The Dream’s starting five of Jordin Canada, Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, Naz Hillmon and Angel Reese has been one of the league’s strongest units this season, with Howard, Gray and Reese earning 2026 WNBA All-Star selections and Canada and Hillmon putting together career years.

Now Atlanta adds one of the most accomplished veterans in league history.

Bonner is in her 17th WNBA season and brings a résumé that includes two WNBA championships with Phoenix in 2009 and 2014, six All-Star selections, two All-WNBA honors and three Sixth Player of the Year awards.

She also ranks third on the WNBA’s all-time scoring list and is one of only three players in league history to record at least 7,000 points, 3,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists.

For a Dream team already preparing for postseason basketball, Bonner’s playoff experience could be just as valuable as her production.

The 6-foot-4 forward has appeared in 15 WNBA postseasons and four WNBA Finals, playing in 98 career playoff games. She is the league’s all-time postseason rebounds leader and ranks second in playoff history in both points and steals.

For her career in the postseason, Bonner has averaged 13.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

This season, Bonner has appeared in 37 games, including 26 starts, while averaging 10.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

Across her WNBA career, she has suited up for Phoenix, Connecticut and Indiana, averaging 14.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

A Fairfield, Alabama native, Bonner starred at Auburn, where she was named the 2009 SEC Player of the Year and earned First Team All-America honors. She finished her college career as Auburn’s all-time leading scorer, and the program retired her No. 24 jersey in 2024.

Bonner was selected with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft by Phoenix.

In corresponding roster moves, Atlanta waived guards Aaliyah Nye and Jaylyn Sherrod. Sherrod had previously been signed to a developmental contract.

The timing of Bonner’s arrival is notable. Atlanta has already secured a playoff spot and now adds a veteran who has been through multiple championship runs, giving the Dream another experienced option as the regular season winds down.

Atlanta returns home on Friday, August 28, to host the Portland Fire, followed by a matchup with the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, August 30.
