Atlanta United Extends Jay Fortune Through 2028-29

Atlanta United is keeping one of its own in the fold.

The club announced Wednesday that it has signed midfielder Jay Fortune to a contract extension through the 2028-29 season, with an option for 2029-30.

Fortune, 23, has become one of the more established Homegrown players in club history. He currently ranks second all-time in appearances and third in goals among Atlanta United Homegrown signings.

“Jay’s journey is a great example of what we hope to see from players coming through our Academy,” Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said.

Henderson praised Fortune’s development, professionalism and leadership, noting that the midfielder has earned the trust and respect of his teammates through his daily approach.

Fortune joined the Atlanta United Academy in 2018 before working his way through the U-17 and U-19 levels and eventually making his professional debut with Atlanta United 2 in July 2020.

Over three and a half seasons with ATL UTD 2, Fortune became a regular in midfield, starting 52 of 68 appearances and even serving as captain.

He signed a Homegrown contract in July 2022 and made his MLS debut on March 11, 2023, against Charlotte FC.

Since then, Fortune has made 74 MLS regular-season and playoff appearances, recording four goals and four assists.

One of his biggest moments came on Aug. 31, 2024, when he scored his first MLS goal — the game-winner in a 1-0 victory at Charlotte FC.

After an injury cut his 2025 season short, Fortune has returned in 2026 and scored twice in 10 MLS appearances, including five starts.

Fortune also represents Trinidad and Tobago internationally and has recorded two goals in 14 appearances since making his debut in 2021.

For Atlanta United, the extension is another sign of the club’s continued commitment to developing talent from within.

Fortune’s journey from the Academy to ATL UTD 2 and now into a long-term First Team role represents exactly the kind of pathway Atlanta United wants to continue building.
