Spain Defeats Argentina in Extra Time Claims Second FIFA World Cup Title

Spain has been crowned the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup champion after defeating defending champion Argentina, 1-0, in extra time Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The championship match remained scoreless through regulation as both teams delivered disciplined defensive performances. Spain finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal, securing the nation’s second FIFA Men’s World Cup title.

Spain’s first World Cup championship came in 2010 when it defeated the Netherlands, 1-0, after extra time in Johannesburg, South Africa. Sixteen years later, La Roja added a second star by defeating Argentina, 1-0, after extra time to capture the 2026 title.

Argentina entered the final attempting to defend its 2022 World Cup championship but was unable to find an equalizer before the final whistle.

The championship match also featured a memorable pregame and halftime celebration. Jennifer Hudson performed the United States national anthem before kickoff, while the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final halftime show included performances by Shakira, Madonna, Justin Bieber, BTS, Burna Boy and The Muppets’ Electric Mayhem Band, creating a star-studded entertainment spectacle for fans around the world.

The 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup concluded after six weeks of competition across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament marked the first Men’s World Cup to feature an expanded 48-team field and delivered memorable matches, dramatic finishes and historic moments throughout North America.

Atlanta proudly served as one of the tournament’s host cities, welcoming supporters from around the world to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for eight matches, including a semifinal, further showcasing the city’s ability to host premier international sporting events.

With the World Cup now complete, attention shifts back to Major League Soccer.

Atlanta United will continue its road stretch when the Five Stripes travel to face Charlotte FC on Wednesday, July 22, at Bank of America Stadium. Following the road match, Atlanta United will return home to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on August 15 to resume MLS action in front of the home supporters.

As one chapter in world soccer history comes to a close, Spain leaves North America as a two-time FIFA Men’s World Cup champion, adding another historic achievement to one of international soccer’s most successful programs.
