Yesterday afternoon, the Atlanta Hawks partnered with Georgia Power to invest directly in the next generation of professionals — hosting an impactful career development event at Spelman College that felt less like a seminar and more like a real playbook for success.
More than 50 students from Spelman and Morehouse College gathered for “The Internship Playbook: How to Show Up, Stand Out and Add Value,” an immersive experience designed to prepare them not just for internships, but for the realities of the modern workplace.
This wasn’t surface-level advice. It was practical, honest, day-one guidance from leaders who are actively hiring, mentoring, and shaping careers. Through a fireside chat and panel discussion, executives from both organizations broke down what students truly need to succeed — from executive presence and professionalism to navigating hybrid work environments and contributing value immediately.
Panelists emphasized that showing up isn’t just about being present; it’s about intention, preparation, and impact. Students heard real talk about communicating with confidence, taking initiative the right way, building meaningful professional relationships, and maintaining energy even in virtual spaces. For many in attendance, it offered insight you simply can’t get from a textbook.
One of the biggest highlights came when Hawks guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker joined the conversation. Instead of discussing basketball, he spoke about discipline, preparation, and the mindset required to perform at a high level — lessons that translate far beyond sports. His presence reinforced that success, whether on the court or in corporate America, is built on consistency and purpose.

The organizers also made sure students were supported in practical ways. Attendees received notebooks, pens, and a meal, allowing them to stay engaged and fully absorb the experience. The atmosphere felt less like a lecture and more like an activation — a space where students were encouraged to ask questions, reflect, and envision themselves stepping confidently into professional roles.
The event is part of the ongoing True to You Workforce Empowerment initiative, a collaboration between the Hawks and Georgia Power focused on expanding career pathways for emerging leaders, including college students, early-career professionals, and veterans re-entering the workforce.
What stood out most was the intentionality. This wasn’t about checking a community box — it was about equipping students with tools they can use immediately and connections that could shape their futures. Yesterday wasn’t just about internships; it was about building confidence, creating access, and reminding young leaders that they belong in every room they walk into
