Hawks Add Lamont Butler and Malik Williams to Roster

The Atlanta Hawks have signed guard Lamont Butler and center Malik Williams, the team announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Butler, a member of Atlanta’s NBA 2K26 Summer League team, spent last season at Kentucky, where he appeared in 27 games (all starts) and posted career-best numbers with 11.4 points, 4.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 26.0 minutes (.498 FG%, .391 3FG%, .735 FT%). The 6-2 guard turned in a career-high 33 points on perfect 10-of-10 shooting in a 93-85 win over Louisville on Dec. 14, knocking down all six of his three-point attempts while adding three rebounds and six assists. His 10 made field goals tied for the third-most without a miss in Kentucky history, while his six threes marked the second-most in program history without a miss. The performance earned him SEC Player of the Week and USBWA National Player of the Week honors.

A native of Moreno Valley, Calif., Butler played his first four collegiate seasons at San Diego State (2020-24), where he led the Aztecs to the 2023 NCAA National Championship Game. He closed his SDSU career ranked fifth all-time in steals (183), sixth in conference victories (52), ninth in total wins and 10th in assists (338). A three-time Mountain West All-Defensive Team honoree, he was also named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2023-24. In five collegiate seasons overall, Butler appeared in 158 games (129 starts), averaging 8.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 23.8 minutes.

Williams arrives in Atlanta with both NBA and G League experience. The 6-11 center played in seven games for the Toronto Raptors during the 2023-24 season, averaging 2.7 points and 5.4 rebounds in 15.3 minutes. In the NBA G League, he has appeared in 86 games (64 starts) over two seasons with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, averaging 12.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 blocks in 24.2 minutes (.444 FG%, .366 3FG%, .674 FT%). Williams recorded 17 double-doubles during the 2024-25 campaign, including eight over a 10-game stretch from Jan. 10 through Feb. 4. He also posted a career-best 23 rebounds against Mexico City on Jan. 29.

Undrafted in 2022, Williams began his professional career with Anwil Wloclawek (Poland), where he averaged 8.1 points and 5.5 rebounds in 31 games. At Louisville, he played in 122 games (62 starts) across five seasons, averaging 7.2 points and 5.5 rebounds in 17.9 minutes. A three-time team captain—the first in program history—Williams earned MVP honors at the 2021 Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds and a career-best four steals in the title game against Maryland.

The 2025-26 season tips off on Wednesday, Oct. 22, when the Hawks host the Toronto Raptors at State Farm Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
