Miranchuk Magic Leads Atlanta United to First Road Win in Toronto

Atlanta United finally broke through away from home, defeating Toronto FC 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field behind a strong second-half performance.

After a quiet and physical first half that ended scoreless, Atlanta found its rhythm after the break. Both sides struggled to create clear chances early, with neither team registering a shot on target before halftime. Toronto controlled possession with 54 percent, but Atlanta’s defense limited the hosts to just one shot while generating five of their own.

Atlanta thought it had taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Cayman Togashi ran onto a well-placed pass from Alexey Miranchuk and finished past goalkeeper Luke Gavran. However, the goal was overturned after a VAR review ruled Togashi offside. The moment proved costly beyond the scoreboard, as Togashi was forced off due to injury just minutes later, with Emmanuel Latte Lath coming on in the 27th minute.

The breakthrough finally came early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Miranchuk stepped up over a direct free kick after Jay Fortune was fouled at the top of the box. Atlanta’s captain delivered in style, curling a precise left-footed strike over the wall and into the top-left corner for his fifth goal of the season.

Atlanta doubled its advantage in the 67th minute with one of its most fluid attacking sequences of the season. Miranchuk helped initiate the move, linking up with Cooper Sanchez, Fortune, and Tristan Muyumba in the buildup. Sanchez drove forward before finding Fafà Picault, who laid the ball off perfectly for Muyumba. The midfielder made no mistake, curling a first-time shot into the right corner to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead.

Toronto responded quickly in the 71st minute when Emilio Aristizabal powered home a header off a cross from Kobe Franklin, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and setting up a tense finish.

From there, Atlanta’s defense rose to the occasion. Stian Gregersen and Juan Berrocal anchored a resilient back line, combining for nine clearances as Toronto pushed forward in waves searching for an equalizer. Atlanta held firm through the final minutes to secure all three points.

The victory marks Atlanta United’s first road win of the season and a much-needed boost as the team improves to 2-7-1 (7 points).

Atlanta returns to action Tuesday, April 28, traveling to face Charlotte FC in the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup.
