Late Collapse Costs Atlanta United in 2-1 Loss to New England

In front of 30,306 fans, Atlanta United let a second-half lead slip away, falling 2-1 to the New England Revolution in a match that flipped late and left the home crowd stunned.

Atlanta looked in control for much of the first half and was rewarded in the 38th minute when Fafa Picault finished from the center of the box, capping off a strong attacking sequence to give the Five Stripes a 1-0 lead. Atlanta created several chances throughout the opening 45 minutes, with  Saba Lobjanidze and Alexey Miranchuk both testing Matt Turner, who kept New England within reach heading into halftime.

The second half told a different story.

Despite sustained pressure and multiple set-piece opportunities, Atlanta couldn’t find a second goal to put the match away. Turner continued to come up big, denying efforts from Miranchuk, Jay Fortune, and Luke Brennan as the Revolution stayed within striking distance.

That persistence paid off in the 73rd minute, New England’s Will Sands rose in the box and headed home a corner delivered by Carles Gil to level the match at 1-1.

Just five minutes later, the visitors struck again.  Peyton Miller capitalized on space inside the box, finishing with a clinical left-footed strike in the 78th minute to give New England a 2-1 lead.

Atlanta threw numbers forward in the closing moments, generating a flurry of late chances. Headers from Juan Berrocal went off target, while Brennan and Fortune saw their efforts saved. In stoppage time, Emmanuel Latte Lath had one final look from close range, but Turner came through again with a decisive save to preserve the result.

The closing minutes also saw tensions rise, with late yellow cards issued to Ilay Feingold and Brooklyn Raines as Atlanta desperately searched for an equalizer that never came.

After controlling the first half and creating chances throughout, Atlanta will be left frustrated by missed opportunities and a second-half defensive lapse that turned three points into none.

Atlanta United returns home for its next match on Saturday, May 2, looking to bounce back and rediscover its finishing edge.
