It wasn’t flashy, but it was a step forward.
Atlanta United battled to a 0-0 draw against D.C. United Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, earning its first clean sheet of the season in a match defined by defensive discipline and missed chances on both sides.
For a team still finding its rhythm early in the season, this one was about stability — and Atlanta delivered on that end of the pitch.
The Five Stripes held D.C. to just one shot on target all night, with goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos anchoring a backline that stayed organized under pressure. It wasn’t a game that will fill highlight reels, but it showed growth in areas Atlanta has been working to clean up.
The first half was a grind.
Both teams struggled to generate consistent attacking opportunities, with each side doing well to disrupt the other’s buildup. Atlanta’s best look came early in the 13th minute through Homegrown midfielder Cooper Sanchez. After collecting a loose header just outside the box, Sanchez quickly turned and fired a shot toward the top corner, forcing a strong save from Sean Johnson.
That moment stood out — not just for the effort, but for the confidence from the young midfielder to take his chance.
Outside of that, clear-cut opportunities were hard to come by. The midfield battle dominated the tempo, with neither side able to fully break through. By halftime, it was clear this match would likely come down to one moment — or none at all.
D.C. came out of the break with a bit more urgency and nearly found that moment early in the second half.
A broken play at the top of Atlanta’s box led to a dangerous opportunity when Tai Baribo gathered a loose ball and laid it off to Jackson Hopkins. Hopkins didn’t hesitate, striking a first-time effort on goal, but Hoyos came up big with a diving save to keep the match level.
It was one of the few times Atlanta’s defense was truly tested — and it passed.
Looking to inject life into the attack, head coach Tata Martino turned to his bench. Steven Alzate and Saba Lobjanidze entered in the second half, bringing fresh energy and a more direct approach going forward.
Alzate nearly made an immediate impact.
In the 80th minute, he combined well with Miguel Almirón down the left channel, creating space for a dangerous cross into the box. The ball found Tomás Jacob at the far post, but the chance slipped away as Atlanta couldn’t convert.
Moments later, D.C. had its own near breakthrough.
Caden Clark found space and fired a shot that rattled off the right post. The ball deflected off the diving Hoyos and out for a corner — a close call that could have completely changed the outcome.
Late in the match, the visitors continued to press. Brandon Servania took a short corner and launched an ambitious shot from distance that struck the top of the crossbar, adding to the tension in the final minutes.
But Atlanta held firm.
Despite the late pressure, the Five Stripes stayed organized defensively and saw out the match to secure a point. While the attack is still searching for consistency, the clean sheet offers something to build on moving forward.
Atlanta United (1-3-1, 4 points) now shifts focus to its next test, returning home Saturday, April 4 to host Columbus Crew. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET as Atlanta looks to turn defensive progress into a complete performance
