MLS Unveils 2027 Sprint Season

A major shift is coming to Major League Soccer — and it’s happening fast.

Major League Soccer officially announced details for the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, a shortened, high-stakes campaign that will serve as the bridge into the league’s new summer-to-spring calendar. It’s a move that aligns MLS with the world’s top soccer leagues — and marks one of the biggest structural changes in league history.

This isn’t just a schedule tweak. This is a full-on reset.

The 2027 Sprint Season will kick off in February and run through May, wrapping up with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup. In a condensed window, every match will matter — and there won’t be much room for error.

Each team will play just 14 regular-season matches, all within their conference. That means every club faces its 14 conference opponents once — split evenly with seven matches at home and seven on the road. No cross-conference games. No extra padding in the schedule. Just straight competition.

And with a shorter season comes higher stakes.

At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams from both the Eastern and Western Conferences will advance to the playoffs. From there, it’s win or go home. The postseason will be a single-elimination format within each conference, leading to a conference champion on each side. Those two teams will then meet in the 2027 MLS Cup to decide it all.

Simple. Fast. Intense.

But it’s not just about lifting a trophy.

The Sprint Season will also determine international qualification, with spots on the line for both the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and the 2028 Leagues Cup. That adds another layer of urgency — teams won’t just be chasing an MLS Cup, they’ll be fighting for their place on bigger stages.

From a fan perspective, this format is built for drama. Fourteen games means every result carries weight. A slow start? That could cost you everything. A hot streak? That might be all you need to make a run.

By the numbers, the structure is straightforward:

  • 14 regular-season matches per team
  • One game against each conference opponent
  • Seven home matches and seven away matches
  • Top eight teams per conference advance to the playoffs
  • Single-elimination postseason format
  • One MLS Cup champion crowned
  • Five Concacaf Champions Cup spots awarded
  • 18 teams qualify for Leagues Cup (nine from each conference)

The full Sprint Season schedule, including matchups and dates, will be announced in the coming months. Clubs are also working through ticketing plans, with more details expected later this summer.

A Bigger Picture Move

While the Sprint Season is a standalone competition, it’s really just the beginning of something much bigger.

Starting in the summer of 2027, MLS will officially transition to a summer-to-spring calendar — aligning with leagues across Europe and other parts of the world. The 2027-28 season will begin in July 2027 and run through May 2028, including the MLS Cup Playoffs at the end of that cycle.

There will also be a midwinter break built into the schedule, with no league matches from mid-December through early February. It’s another step toward matching the global soccer calendar and managing player workload during colder months.

For a league that has steadily grown over the years, this is another signal that MLS is thinking bigger — and more globally — than ever before.

The 2027 Sprint Season may be short, but it’s going to be packed with urgency, pressure, and playoff-like intensity from day one.

And if this is the preview of what’s to come, MLS is clearly entering a new era.
