Building Stronger Families and Communities at Good Neighbor Day

On Saturday, young people from Good Neighbor Clubs across Metro Atlanta — along with their families — filled State Farm Arena for a day that was less about basketball scores and more about building stronger lives off the court.

Good Neighbor Day marked the first time families from multiple clubs gathered together in one place, turning the arena into a hub for wellness, learning and connection. From the moment doors opened, the focus was clear: strengthen the body, support the mind and reinforce what it means to show up for your community.

Youth participants jumped right into action with basketball clinics led by Hawks Basketball Academy staff, rotating through drills, games and skill-building activities on both the main court and practice floors. But the day went far beyond hoops. Personal development sessions encouraged students to recognize negative self-talk, replace it with positive affirmations and practice self-kindness — tools designed to stick long after the event ended.

While the kids stayed active, parents and guardians participated in their own set of workshops focused on creating safe, supportive home environments. Sessions covered everything from emergency preparedness and fire safety to recognizing signs of stress or anxiety in children and learning how to communicate effectively through it. The message throughout the day: strong families build strong communities.

There were also moments of pure joy. Families shared a meal together, enjoyed appearances from Harry the Hawk and the ATL dancers, and connected with other families who share similar goals for their children’s growth and well-being.

The event closed with a powerful reminder that community extends beyond the arena walls. Students participated in a volunteer project benefiting Meals on Wheels Atlanta, writing uplifting letters and decorating meal boxes for local seniors. It was a simple act, but one that reinforced compassion, service and intergenerational connection.

Since launching their partnership in 2018, the Hawks and State Farm have expanded Good Neighbor Clubs throughout Metro Atlanta, creating safe spaces where thousands of young people can access educational support, mentorship and community programming. Facilities across the region — from Southwest Atlanta to Gwinnett, Decatur and Brookhaven — now serve as year-round anchors for these efforts.

Good Neighbor Day showed what happens when those individual spaces come together. It wasn’t just a one-day event; it felt like a blueprint for how communities can grow stronger when families are equipped with the right tools, support and opportunities.

And judging by the energy inside the building, the impact will last far longer than a single Saturday.
