The Atlanta Falcons delivered one of the most thrilling victories of the 2025 NFL season on Thursday Night Football, rallying from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 29–28, in Week 15. Tight end Kyle Pitts put together a career-defining performance with three touchdowns, while Zane Gonzalez capped the night with a walk-off 43-yard field goal as time expired.
Tampa Bay appeared in full control entering the fourth quarter, but a string of late-game mistakes opened the door for Atlanta. The turning point came when Baker Mayfield threw a costly interception to cornerback Dee Alford, shifting momentum entirely in the Falcons’ favor. From there, Atlanta mounted an aggressive comeback fueled by clutch throws from Kirk Cousins and a series of acrobatic, high-pressure catches from Pitts. A controversial simultaneous-possession ruling benefiting Atlanta kept a crucial drive alive, ultimately helping set up the winning field goal.
The loss dropped the Buccaneers out of first place in the NFC South and dealt a blow to their playoff hopes. For the Falcons, the chaotic but resilient victory kept their postseason aspirations alive and marked one of the most memorable comebacks in recent franchise history. It also became the fifth time Atlanta has won a game after trailing by 14 or more points in the fourth quarter, and the first time since a 1993 win over the 49ers in Week 15. Wearing their 1966 throwback uniforms, the Falcons improved to 15–3 in those jerseys since 2009. Atlanta’s defense also continued an impressive trend, holding its opponent scoreless on the opening drive for the fourth straight game, which stands as the third-longest active streak in the NFL.
Kirk Cousins delivered a standout performance, completing 30 of 44 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns for a 117.0 passer rating. His three touchdowns tied him with Carson Palmer for 15th all-time in career passing touchdowns, and his 1,158 passing yards against Tampa Bay over the last two seasons are the most by any quarterback against a single opponent during that span. Cousins also recorded the 32nd game-winning drive of his career, placing him fourth among active quarterbacks since entering the league in 2012.
Bijan Robinson was electric once again, finishing with 93 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding a career-high eight receptions for 82 yards. He extended his streak to nine consecutive divisional games with at least 100 scrimmage yards, the longest such streak in Falcons history. It marked his 27th career game of 100 or more scrimmage yards, the most by any player since he entered the league in 2023. Robinson also notched his fourth game this season with at least 175 scrimmage yards.
The night belonged to Kyle Pitts, who set career highs with 11 receptions, 166 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. His 166 yards are the most by any tight end in a single game this season, and he became the only tight end to surpass 150 receiving yards with multiple touchdowns in a game this year. Pitts remains the only tight end in Falcons history with more than 150 receiving yards in a game, a feat he has now achieved twice, last doing so in 2021. His performance placed him alongside Shannon Sharpe, Kellen Winslow, and Todd Christensen as the only tight ends in NFL history with at least 10 catches, 150 yards, and three touchdowns in a single game. Pitts also became the second player ever to reach those marks in a Thursday night contest. He recorded 110 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, the first tight end in Falcons history to do so. Pitts now has 73 receptions on the season, the most he has ever recorded in a single year. With Robinson, he became part of just the third running back/tight end duo in NFL history to each finish with at least 150 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in the same game.
David Sills V added career highs with six receptions and 78 yards. Dee Alford contributed three tackles, a pass breakup, and his second interception of the season, making Atlanta one of only four NFC teams with at least three players who have multiple interceptions this year. Rookie edge rusher James Pearce Jr. continued his breakout season with two sacks, giving him eight on the year and setting a franchise rookie record since sacks became an official stat in 1982. He also became just the fourth rookie since 1982 to record a sack in six straight games. Jessie Bates led the team with eight tackles, while Brandon Dorlus added his seventh sack of the season. Kaden Elliss recorded six solo tackles and reached double-digit tackles for loss for the second time in his career. LaCale London tallied his fourth sack of the season, and fellow rookie Jalon Walker contributed a half sack, giving him 5.5 on the year. Divine Deablo added another half sack as well.
Zane Gonzalez closed out the game with a perfectly executed 43-yard field goal as time expired, the fourth walk-off kick of his career. It punctuated a sloppy but determined performance in which the Falcons overcame penalties, adversity, and a hostile Tampa Bay crowd to secure one of their most dramatic wins of the season.
The Falcons will travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals on Sunday, December 21, before returning home to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 29 to face the Los Angeles Rams.
