As the Atlanta Hawks prepare to wrap up their preseason schedule tonight against the Houston Rockets at State Farm Arena, the team announced it has requested waivers on guard Deivon Smith.
Smith, a Decatur, Georgia native, appeared in two games with the Hawks during the NBA 2K26 Summer League in Las Vegas, averaging 5.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 14.2 minutes per game while shooting 60 percent from the field and a perfect 100 percent from the line.
Before joining Atlanta’s Summer League roster, Smith had an impressive collegiate run, suiting up for St. John’s during the 2024–25 season where he posted 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game in 30 appearances (17 starts), earning All-MET Honorable Mention honors.
Across a five-year collegiate career, Smith played in 139 games (64 starts) while averaging 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.1 steals in 24.8 minutes per game. His journey included stops at Mississippi State (2020–21), Georgia Tech (2021–23), Utah (2023–24), and St. John’s (2024–25) — a testament to his persistence and growth as a player.
The Hawks’ preseason continues tonight as they host the Houston Rockets to close out their exhibition slate before turning full focus toward the start of the 2025–26 NBA regular season.
