The Atlanta Falcons rolled into Carolina looking to bounce back — but instead walked out with a tough 30-0 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.
Atlanta actually moved the ball, piling up 332 total yards (201 passing, 131 rushing), but the offense stalled out time and time again. Trips into plus territory went nowhere, opportunities slipped away, and a division rival made them pay. Meanwhile, Carolina put together a balanced 224-yard day and turned it into points.
Special teams didn’t do the Falcons any favors, either. Newly promoted kicker Parker Romo had chances to at least get Atlanta on the board but came up empty twice, leaving points on the field and adding to the frustration of a shutout loss.
If there was one bright spot, it was Bijan Robinson. The third-year back once again showed why he’s the heartbeat of this offense, racking up 111 scrimmage yards (72 rushing, 39 receiving). That marks his 21st career game with 100-plus scrimmage yards — the most in the NFL since 2023. He’s also up to nine straight games with 90-plus scrimmage yards, the longest active streak in the league.
Robinson added five catches for 39 yards, tying Alvin Kamara for the most games (26) with three or more receptions by a running back since 2023. He also became the first Falcons RB since William Andrews in 1983 to open a season with three straight 100-yard scrimmage games.
Other offensive takeaways included David Sills V hauling in his first catch as a Falcon — a nine-yard grab in the third quarter — while rookie Nathan Carter flashed some promise, picking up 47 yards on seven carries.
On special teams, DeMarcco Hellams recovered a muffed punt in the first quarter. That gave Atlanta back-to-back games with muffed punt recoveries for the first time since 2000. The Falcons now have three since the start of 2024, tied with Pittsburgh for the most in the NFL.
Defensively, Kaden Elliss continued his steady play with nine tackles (eight solo) and a sack. He’s now up to 20 straight games with at least four tackles — tied for the fifth-longest active streak in the league. Elliss also has 10 games since 2022 with seven or more tackles and a sack, tied for the most in the NFL. Xavier Watts matched Elliss with a career-high nine tackles, while Dee Alford broke up two passes, tying his single-game best.
What’s Next
With the loss, Atlanta falls to 1-2 on the season and will need a quick regroup as the road trip continues. The Falcons’ defense has shown resilience in spurts, but the offense will need to find answers fast if Atlanta hopes to stay competitive in the NFC South.
Next up, the Falcons return home to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where they’ll host the Washington Commanders on Sunday, September
