Hawks Request Waivers on Javan Johnson and Dwight Murray Jr.

Just yesterday, the Atlanta Hawks announced the signings of forward Javan (JAY-vin) Johnson and guard Dwight Murray Jr. Today, the team announced it has requested waivers on both players.

Johnson, a 6’6” forward, brings NBA G League and international experience. He spent two seasons with the Santa Cruz Warriors (2023-25), averaging 11.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 97 games (69 starts). He also suited up for Atlanta in the NBA 2K26 Summer League in Las Vegas, posting 7.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Beyond the G League, Johnson played two seasons overseas with Gladiadores de Anzoátegui of Venezuela’s SLB. A native of Decatur, Alabama, he played five collegiate seasons across Troy, Iowa State, and DePaul, averaging 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists over 127 career games.

Murray Jr. is no stranger to the Hawks organization, having appeared in 43 games with the College Park Skyhawks last season. The 6’0” guard averaged 9.0 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in nearly 24 minutes of action. He also competed with Atlanta’s NBA 2K26 Summer League team, contributing 4.3 points per game in limited minutes.

Undrafted in 2023, Murray Jr. began his professional career overseas with KK Mornar in Montenegro, where he gained valuable experience across three leagues—Liga ABA, Europe Cup, and BLC Qual—averaging 9.1 points and 3.2 assists. A native of Austell, Georgia, he played five collegiate seasons at Incarnate Word and Rider. In 145 career games (114 starts), he averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. As a senior in 2022-23, he earned All-MAAC First Team honors while leading Rider with his scoring and playmaking.

With these moves, Atlanta continues to shape its roster ahead of training camp, balancing opportunities for young talent while keeping flexibility for the season ahead.
