Atlanta United Draws in Montréal, Announces Transfer of Derrick Williams and Short-Term Signing of Sal Mazzaferro

ATLANTA — Alexey Miranchuk’s late header salvaged a point for Atlanta United on Saturday night, as the Five Stripes battled CF Montréal to a 1-1 draw at Stade Saputo. The equalizer, coming in the 87th minute, marked Miranchuk’s fifth MLS goal of the season and seventh across all competitions. The match also featured the debuts of summer signings Juan Berrocal and Steven Alzate.

Atlanta, now 4-11-10 (22 points), looks to build momentum ahead of its next MLS matchup against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (9:30 p.m. ET).

In other club news, Atlanta United announced the transfer of defender Derrick Williams to Reading FC of England’s League One. While no fee was involved, the Five Stripes retain a percentage of any future transfer.

“Derrick has been a great teammate and a true professional during his time with the club. This is a great opportunity for him to continue his career and is in the best interest of all parties involved,” said Atlanta United Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.

Williams joined Atlanta in January 2024 and started 48 of his 51 appearances in all competitions, recording two goals and two assists. The veteran center back has made 122 career MLS appearances, previously playing for Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United.

Additionally, the club announced the signing of Sal Mazzaferro to a Short-Term Agreement ahead of Saturday’s match in Colorado, adding depth to Atlanta’s roster.
