Atlanta United President Garth Lagerwey Takes Indefinite Leave

Atlanta United announced today that President and CEO Garth Lagerwey will be stepping away from his duties indefinitely after recently being diagnosed with cancer. While he has already begun treatment, there is currently no timeline for his return. The club noted that his prognosis for a full recovery is promising.

In his absence, day-to-day operations will continue under the leadership of Chief Soccer Officer Chris Henderson, Chief Business Officer Skate Noftsinger, and Senior VP of Strategy Dimitrios Efstathiou. The trio will provide regular updates to Lagerwey and AMB Sports and Entertainment CEO Rich McKay.

Team owner Arthur M. Blank voiced strong support for Lagerwey, saying, “We stand fully behind Garth and his family as they navigate this difficult challenge. His strength and optimism are what make him such a remarkable leader. I’m confident in the team we have in place to continue pushing forward, and we all look forward to welcoming Garth back.”

McKay echoed the sentiment, adding, “Garth built a tremendous executive team, and we’re all here to offer additional support during his time away. The entire Blank Family of Businesses is rallying behind him.”

Lagerwey released a statement thanking Blank and the organization for their unwavering support. “This is a tough decision, but it’s necessary for me to focus on my health. I couldn’t ask to be part of a better organization. Our club is in great hands with Chris, Skate, and Dimitrios, and I’m confident in their leadership,” he said.

Closing with a message of hope and determination, Lagerwey added, “I shall return.”
