SKYHAWKS PARTICIPATE IN READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY AT COLLEGE PARK ELEMENTARY

On Read Across America Day, also known as Dr Seuss birthday the College Park Skyhawks staff was in action at College Park Elementary School to help students K-5 pick out books to take home.

Skyhawks and Atlanta Hawks forward Charlie Brown, Jr. was on site and helped students pick out books. Brown also read to two classes.

Also, spotted was the WNBA Atlanta Dream staff and mascot Star.

“This is our second time we have had this event,  Read Across America Book Literacy Giveaway Day.  The children come in and what they will do is have a chance to get three books of their choice. They can take books home for their parents to read to them or take books they want to read with their siblings.” said Parent Liaison, Sanchea Simmons-Harris. “It’s just an exciting event for our students and all these volunteers to come out and share with us on this day. This is helping to start our literacy lounge at home for our students.”

This is the first time the College Park Skyhawks participated in this event.  The team was initially invited to help the students pick out books but the organization wanted to bring something to contribute.
On Feb. 28., Skyhawks staff members held a book drive and donated over 500 books to College Park Elementary. The goal for each student being able to receive three books appropriate for their reading level was set and accomplished.
