Breakup, No Makeup: Panthers release Cam Newton

After 9 season with the Carolina Panthers, former MVP Cam Newton was released, the team announced on Tuesday.

“Cam has meant a lot to this organization and the Carolinas,” general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. “Everyone saw his performances on the field. I had the privilege of seeing how hard he worked off the field, and his commitment to this team when no one was watching. He’s the ultimate competitor and it physically hurts him to lose. He willed this team to victory on many occasions and will always be considered one of the greatest players in the history of this franchise. His contributions to this team, this community and the game of football will leave a lasting impact on our organization.”

After suffering a Lisfranc injury, and missing the final 14 games of the season, Newton passed a physical Monday in Atlanta that was organized by the Panthers, according to ESPN.

On March 17, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater agreed to a three-year, $63 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. Releasing Newton opened the team $19.1 million cap space for 2020 with only $2 million in dead money.

The question of the day: What jersey will Cam Newton wear when football season begins again in the fall? Chargers, Redskins, Jaguars, Patriots, Broncos or maybe the Falcons?

One could easily assume that because Newton is a ATL native it only makes since that Newton would come play for the home team.

The Atlanta Falcons signed former UGA star running back and Los Angeles Rams Todd Gurley to a one-year contract worth $6 million last week.

Meanwhile, Newton was spotted working out with Former and present Falcons players.

Former Falcons Mohamed Sanu posted a video on his Instagram story of Newton throwing to wide receivers Calvin Ridley and Christian Blake.

Can you imagine Todd Gurley and Cam Newton playing on the same team? Bringing Cam Newton in as Marty Ice backup is highly unlikely.
