Atlanta United put together one of its most complete road performances of the season Wednesday night, defeating CF Montréal 3-0 at Stade Saputo behind goals from Miguel Almirón, Giuliano Galoppo and Breel Embolo.
The victory also marked Atlanta’s third consecutive road clean sheet, another encouraging sign for a team that has shown improved defensive stability away from home.
Montréal created the first real chance of the night in the 17th minute when Alexis Sanchez turned in the attacking third and fired from the top of the box. Lucas Hoyos was ready, tipping the effort over the crossbar.
Five minutes later, Atlanta struck first.
In the 22nd minute, Alexey Miranchuk started the move by combining with Almirón near the edge of the box. The ball eventually worked its way to Elías Báez, who cut a pass back toward the top of the arc.
Almirón met it first time and fired a shot off the right post and into the net to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead.
The goal was Almirón’s sixth of the season.
Atlanta continued to apply pressure, and Galoppo nearly doubled the lead in the 26th minute, but Montréal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza pushed his attempt wide.
Galoppo would not be denied for long.
In the 42nd minute, Atlanta won a free kick and Almirón sent the ball toward the far post. After Montréal failed to clear it cleanly, Paulo Díaz collected the ball on the right side of the box and floated a cross toward Embolo at the back post.
Embolo headed the ball on target, forcing Breza into a save, but the rebound fell directly to Galoppo, who tapped it over the line to make it 2-0.
Atlanta carried that two-goal advantage into halftime and kept its foot on the gas after the break.
In the 60th minute, the Five Stripes added a third.
After losing possession on the right side, Miranchuk and Jay Fortune worked together to win the ball back. Miranchuk then produced a slick back-heel pass along the end line to Fortune.
Fortune sent the ball across the box to an open Almirón, whose attempt was saved on the goal line by Breza.
But the rebound fell straight to Embolo.
The Atlanta striker made no mistake, smashing the ball into the net for his second goal of the season and giving Atlanta a commanding 3-0 lead.
From there, the Five Stripes saw the match out comfortably.
Hoyos and the Atlanta back line kept Montréal off the scoreboard, preserving another road shutout and securing all three points.
For Atlanta, the result was about more than the scoreline.
The Five Stripes were sharp in possession, dangerous in transition and disciplined defensively. Almirón continued to produce, Galoppo found the net again and Embolo added another goal as he continues settling into the attack.
Just as important, Atlanta’s defense delivered another composed performance.
Three straight road clean sheets is no small feat, especially in a league where away points are never easy to come by.
Atlanta United improves to 8-15-6 with 30 points.
The Five Stripes return home on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they host Inter Miami CF at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
After a convincing 3-0 road win, Atlanta now heads back home with momentum — and another chance to build on it.
