ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons’ home opener did not go the way they hoped, as the Carolina Panthers handed Atlanta a 34-3 loss Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
While the scoreboard told the story of a difficult afternoon, the Falcons still came away with several individual milestones, highlighted by running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Drake London.
Robinson finished with 72 rushing yards on 16 carries, becoming the fastest player in Falcons history to reach 4,000 career rushing yards. He reached the milestone in his 53rd career game, surpassing William Andrews, who needed 54 games.
At 24 years and 233 days old, Robinson also became the youngest Falcon to reach 4,000 career rushing yards.
The milestone placed him in even more exclusive company across the NFL.
With 4,065 rushing yards and 209 career receptions, Robinson became the third-youngest player in league history to record at least 4,000 rushing yards and 200 receptions. Only Edgerrin James, who accomplished the feat at 24 years and 129 days, and LaDainian Tomlinson, at 24 years and 160 days, reached those marks at a younger age.
Robinson has also continued to find success against Carolina. Sunday marked his fifth consecutive game against the Panthers with at least 65 rushing yards and two receptions. That is the second-longest such streak against one opponent in Falcons history, trailing only Andrews’ six-game run against the Rams from 1980 through 1983.
London added a milestone of his own.
The Falcons receiver finished with 51 receiving yards, pushing his career total to 4,041 yards. London reached 4,000 receiving yards in his 64th game, making him the third-fastest player in franchise history to reach the mark behind Julio Jones, who did it in 47 games, and Andre Rison, who reached it in 62.
Atlanta’s defense also managed to continue one of its more consistent streaks despite the lopsided result.
The Falcons recorded two sacks against Carolina, extending their streak to 19 consecutive games with at least one sack. That currently stands as the fourth-longest active streak in the NFL.
Defensive end Samson Ebukam recorded his first sack as a Falcon, increasing his career total to 35.
Gervon Dexter Sr. also picked up his first sack in an Atlanta uniform, bringing his career total to 14.5.
Rookie safety Xavier Watts continued making his presence felt, finishing with a team-high seven tackles, including six solo stops, while also forcing a fumble. It marked the sixth game of his career with at least five tackles.
But Atlanta’s individual accomplishments were overshadowed by an offense that struggled to generate points throughout the afternoon.
The Falcons managed just three points against Carolina and never reached the end zone. Turnovers, penalties and missed opportunities repeatedly halted possessions, allowing the Panthers to build separation and control the game.
Carolina led 10-0 after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 20-3 by halftime. The Panthers then added 14 unanswered points in the third quarter, putting Atlanta in a 34-3 hole that proved insurmountable.
Atlanta’s defense generated pressure at times, but Carolina consistently capitalized on short fields and explosive plays while the Falcons were unable to manufacture a response offensively.
The result leaves Atlanta with plenty to clean up moving forward.
For a team looking to establish momentum at home, Sunday instead became a reminder of how quickly turnovers, penalties and missed opportunities can turn into a long afternoon.
“Obviously, extremely disappointed in that game and extremely disappointed in how that game started. And then, [we] could not crawl out of that hole. And then the second half got away from us. So very disappointed.” stated Head Coach Stefanski post game. “As you guys know, giveaways and takeaways are the key to this game and to turn it over that many times. And obviously, we didn’t take away at all. There’s no way to win in the NFL like that. We’ll have to learn from it and then we’ll have to get better from these experiences. And that means Thursday night.”
The Falcons will look to regroup quickly as they travel to Green Bay for a Thursday night matchup against the Packers on September 24. Despite the 34-3 defeat, the performances of Robinson, London and several defensive standouts give Atlanta a few positives to build on heading into the short week.
