Atlanta United continued strengthening its defense Tuesday, announcing the signing of veteran center back Paulo Díaz through the 2027-28 season with club options for 2028-29 and 2029-30.
The 31-year-old defender joins Atlanta on a free transfer after spending the last seven seasons with Argentine powerhouse River Plate. Díaz will occupy an international roster spot once he receives his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
“Paulo is a player who will bring toughness, competition and a winning mentality to our group,” Atlanta United Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said. “He’s a center back who has a good feel for the game and understands the moments to be aggressive or hold the line defensively. He brings great experience at the club and international level and fits the style that we want to play at Atlanta United. We’re excited to welcome him to Atlanta.”
The signing gives Atlanta another experienced defender after recently adding Paraguayan international Júnior Alonso, signaling the club’s commitment to reinforcing its back line as MLS play resumes following the FIFA World Cup break.
Díaz arrives with an impressive résumé that spans three countries and more than a decade of professional soccer. Across stops in Chile, Argentina and Saudi Arabia, he has made 364 club appearances while contributing 27 goals and 11 assists. Even more impressive is his winning pedigree, capturing eight major trophies during his career.
Most of that success came with River Plate, where Díaz became one of South America’s most dependable defenders. During seven seasons with the Argentine giants, he made 222 appearances, scored 13 goals and helped the club lift seven trophies, including Argentine league championships in 2021 and 2023, an Argentine Cup, two Argentine Supercopas and two Trofeo de Campeones titles.
His professional journey began with Chilean club Palestino before moving to Colo-Colo, where he was part of a league championship team. Díaz later established himself at San Lorenzo in Argentina, making 69 appearances while helping the club qualify for both Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores before a season in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli.
Internationally, Díaz has been a fixture for Chile since making his senior debut in 2015. He has earned 56 caps for La Roja, appearing extensively in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying and Copa América competition.
The addition of Díaz further reshapes Atlanta United’s defensive unit with a player known for his composure, physicality and leadership. His experience playing in high-pressure matches and championship environments should provide immediate value to a squad looking to climb the Eastern Conference standings.
Atlanta United returns to action following the FIFA World Cup break on Friday, July 17, when it travels to face Nashville SC at GEODIS Park. Díaz’s arrival gives manager Ronny Deila another experienced option as the club begins the second half of the MLS season with renewed expectations.
