It was another night of narrow margins for Atlanta United, this time a 1–0 defeat to Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field — a match defined by early pressure, missed chances, and a goal that came against the run of early balance.
The result overshadowed a milestone moment, as Miguel Almirón made his 100th MLS regular season appearance for Atlanta United, becoming just the sixth player in club history to reach the century mark. A significant achievement on a night where the final scoreline didn’t reflect the fight.
Chicago struck first in the 13th minute through Maren Haile-Selassie. The move started down the right side, where Philip Zinckernagel drove into the box and cut a cross toward Jonathan Bamba, who quickly laid it off for Haile-Selassie to finish into the bottom corner.
Atlanta didn’t take long to respond.
Just minutes later, Tomás Jacob nearly equalized with a header that clipped the outside of the post. In the 17th minute, Saba Lobjanidze delivered a dangerous ball back across goal, where Stian Gregersen rose well and powered a header on target — only for Chicago’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi to clear it off the line.
The pressure continued in waves. In the 31st minute, Elías Báez created space down the left before cutting the ball back to Latte Lath, but the striker’s first-time effort went wide from close range.
Chicago had their own dangerous spell before halftime, hitting the frame twice in quick succession. Andrew Gutman’s header struck the post in the 39th minute, followed almost immediately by a Bamba effort that crashed off the crossbar.
Atlanta kept pushing after the break. Almirón’s corner in the 56th minute found Báez, but his header was comfortably saved by Chris Brady. At the other end, Lucas Hoyos came up big in the 73rd minute, denying Gutman from close range before producing another key stop on Bamba in the 83rd to keep Atlanta within reach.
The final moments brought one last surge.
Deep into stoppage time, Almirón and Cayman Togashi both had chances from inside the box, but Chicago bodies were in the way at the decisive moment, blocking and smothering attempts to seal the result.
Atlanta leaves Chicago frustrated, knowing the chances were there — but the finishing touch wasn’t.
Atlanta United (1-5-1, 4 points) now turns quickly to its next test, traveling to face Chattanooga FC in the Round of 32 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday at Finley Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET).
