Indy Edges Vibe in Four-Set Battle as Missed Opportunities Prove Costly

The Indy Ignite defeated the Atlanta Vibe 3–1 on Saturday in a match defined by razor-thin margins and missed chances.

“That was disappointing, to say the least,” Atlanta head coach Kayla Banwarth said afterward. “That match should have been won in four. No question in my head we had opportunities to finish sets but we didn’t capitalize.”

Indy opened with a tightly contested first set, pulling away late for a 25–21 win.

Atlanta responded with urgency in the second. Behind a dominant stretch from opposite hitter Aiko Jones and outside hitter Leah Edmond — who combined for 10 kills and three blocks — the Vibe captured the set 25–23 to even the match. The surge showcased the physical presence Atlanta can bring when its attack is clicking.

Momentum, however, proved difficult to sustain. The Ignite narrowly stole the third set in extra points, 27–25, before sealing the match with another close frame, 25–23, in the fourth.

Jones led Atlanta offensively with 15 kills on an efficient 43 percent attack percentage, adding three blocks and eight digs in a strong all-around performance. She credited recent improvements to refocusing on fundamentals and coaching feedback.

“Going back to those basics has put me in really good positions to get kills and be successful,” Jones said. “I know my team is covering me and Averi is putting me in great positions.”

Edmond continued her consistent season with 14 kills, three blocks, and five digs, contributing on both ends of the floor. She emphasized the growing balance within the Vibe offense — a positive trend even amid the loss.

“You can give each game of the season of someone who showed up in a different way,” Edmond said. “It’s exciting, but we still need to find a stride where we’re getting that from everyone every single night.”

Rookie setter Averi Carlson orchestrated the offense with 42 assists, marking her fourth match this season with 40 or more assists — a sign of her increasing comfort at the professional level.

Despite the defeat, Atlanta’s competitiveness in each set underscored how close the team is to breaking through consistently. Execution in key moments, however, remains the difference between wins and losses.

The Vibe now turn their attention to another road challenge, facing the Omaha Supernovas on Thursday, February 26 at 8 p.m. ET.
