Atlanta United Captain Brad Guzan Announces Retirement Following 2025 Season

Atlanta United goalkeeper and captain Brad Guzan has announced that he will retire following the 2025 MLS season, bringing to a close an incredible 21-year professional career. Guzan’s journey spanned Chivas USA, Aston Villa, and Atlanta United, totaling 551 club appearances and 64 caps for the United States Men’s National Team. Along the way, he captured three Concacaf Gold Cups with the USMNT and helped Atlanta United secure the 2018 MLS Cup, 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and 2019 Campeones Cup. Guzan retires as Atlanta United’s all-time leader in appearances.

Atlanta United will host Guzan’s retirement press conference on Thursday, Oct. 16 at noon ET. The club will honor his legendary career before their final match of the season against D.C. United on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (6 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor).

The second overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of South Carolina, Guzan began his professional career with Chivas USA. Over three and a half seasons, he made an immediate impact, earning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors and a spot on the MLS Best XI in 2007.

In July 2008, Guzan made the leap to the English Premier League with Aston Villa, where he would make 171 appearances across all competitions, including 144 in England’s top flight. Loan spells with Hull City and Middlesbrough brought his total English appearances to 201 before returning to MLS in 2017.

Guzan joined Atlanta United midway through the 2017 season and quickly became a cornerstone for the club. By the time of his retirement, he held club records in all competitions (261 appearances), MLS appearances (224), MLS wins (99), MLS saves (703), and MLS clean sheets (67). He played a pivotal role in Atlanta’s golden period, lifting the 2018 MLS Cup, 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and 2019 Campeones Cup.

Internationally, Guzan earned 64 caps with the United States Men’s National Team, making his debut on Feb. 19, 2006, in a friendly against Guatemala. He was a three-time Concacaf Gold Cup champion and represented the U.S. at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, multiple Copa America tournaments, and the 2008 Summer Olympics as the starting goalkeeper for the U-21 team.
