Whew! Talk about a dramatic finish.
Atlanta United walked away with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Toronto FC Saturday night at BMO Field — and it took a 101st-minute penalty kick to get it done. That’s right, Latte Lath stepped up in the final seconds of stoppage time, buried the equalizer from the spot, and helped Atlanta snag a point on the road. And let me tell you — it was ice in the veins from our No. 9.
The night also marked the MLS debut for 18-year-old goalkeeper Jayden Hibbert, who came up big with four saves, keeping Atlanta in it all night long. Remember the name, y’all.
Atlanta came out aggressive early, with the first real chance in the 9th minute. Luis Abram found Saba Lobjanidze on the left wing, who worked inside and fed Bartosz Slisz near the top of the box. Slisz let one fly to the top right corner, but Sean Johnson came up with the save.
Then came a near-breakthrough in the 34th — Miguel Almirón (yes, he’s back!) threaded a pass that sliced through Toronto’s backline and found Latte Lath, whose shot went just wide of the far post. Right before halftime, Brooks Lennon had a close call too, firing a shot off a deflected cross that Johnson tipped over the bar.
Toronto struck first, though, in the 47th minute. After a strong save from Hibbert, the home side capitalized on a corner kick, with Deybi Flores heading one home to make it 1-0.
But give credit to Ronny Deila — the adjustments came quick. He brought on Luke Brennan and later Jamal Thiaré, shifting to a two-striker system and putting pressure on Toronto late. Hibbert stayed composed, making another big save in the 79th to deny Corbeanu once again.
And then… chaos.
In second-half stoppage time, Brennan was fouled in the box — and after video review, the referee pointed to the spot. Latte Lath didn’t flinch, delivering the latest goal in Atlanta United’s league history. A clutch finish, and a well-earned road point.
So, here’s where we stand:
Atlanta United (4-10-7, 19 points) is still looking to climb the table, but this one showed some grit and growth — especially from the young guys.
The squad is back in action Wednesday, July 16, hosting Chicago Fire at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kickoff’s at 7:30 p.m. ET, and you know the vibes — back at home, under the lights, and hungry for three points.
Let’s go, Five Stripes!
