Julio Jones Bids Farewell on 404 Day: A Falcons Legend Ends His Historic NFL Journey

On Friday, April 4, 2025, Julio Jones officially closed the book on one of the most remarkable careers in NFL history. The 36-year-old wide receiver announced his retirement via a heartfelt video on the social media app Squad, reflecting on his journey from a young boy in Foley, Alabama, to one of the most dominant forces the league has ever seen. Choosing April 4—“404 Day,” a celebration of Atlanta’s area code—was no coincidence. It was a tribute to the city where Jones built his legacy and became a beloved figure, leaving an imprint on Falcons fans and football history alike.

Drafted sixth overall by the Falcons in 2011 after a standout career at Alabama, Jones redefined the wide receiver position with his rare blend of speed, power, and precision. In his 10 seasons with Atlanta, he shattered franchise records, becoming the team’s all-time leader in receptions (848) and receiving yards (12,896), while ranking second in touchdowns (60). His 2014–2019 stretch was the most productive six-year span for any receiver in NFL history, highlighted by unforgettable moments like his 300-yard game against Carolina and a jaw-dropping sideline grab in Super Bowl LI. Though his final seasons with the Titans, Buccaneers, and Eagles were slowed by injury, Jones still finished with 13,703 career yards—good for 16th all-time—and a career average of 82.5 yards per game, ranking fifth in NFL history.

In his retirement video, Jones thanked his family, coaches like Nick Saban and Mike Smith, and teammates, notably Matt Ryan, with whom he formed a dynamic duo in Atlanta. He expressed gratitude to the Falcons and the city, saying, “I’m making this announcement today because of the city of Atlanta. Thank you, man, I appreciate y’all. It’s nothing but love.” Though his exit from Atlanta in 2021 was rocky—marked by a public trade request—his legacy as a Falcons icon and future Hall of Famer remains intact. As his NFL chapter comes to and end a new beginning is on the horizon. All eyes turn to 2029, when Canton is sure to call.
