The Atlanta Vibe (2-1) thrilled fans at Gas South Arena Thursday night, defeating the Columbus Fury (0-2) in a nail-biting five-set match to kick off their 2025 home opener. This marks Atlanta’s second consecutive win, following a dominant three-set victory over the Vegas Thrill last Sunday.

Defense was the key to success for the Vibe, with the team putting up 12 total blocks and recording an impressive 86 digs. Outside hitter Leah Edmond spearheaded the defensive effort with five blocks, while middle blocker McKenna Vicini added three. On the backline, libero Morgan Hentz anchored the defense with a match-high 27 digs. Joining her in double-digit digs were Pia Timmer (13), Marlie Monserez (12), Edmond (12), and Merritt Beason (10).

Offensively, the Vibe showcased their depth and precision, hitting .235 as a team. Beason led the charge with a career-high 23 kills, supported by Edmond’s 13 kills and Timmer’s 11.

One of the game’s pivotal moments came in the final set when opposite hitter Anna Dixon made her on-court debut. Facing a 6-9 deficit, Dixon delivered two clutch kills to swing momentum back in Atlanta’s favor. Setter Whitney Bower added an ace and key assists, propelling the Vibe to a 16-14 victory in the decisive fifth set. Beason capped off the win with a powerful kill to seal the match.

Merritt Beason’s 23 kills marked a career-high, as she led the charge for a resilient Atlanta team. The Vibe’s defensive efforts also played a significant role in the win, totaling 86 digs and 12 blocks to stifle the Fury’s attack.

The Vibe now look ahead to their next matchup, hosting the Grand Rapids Rise on Sunday, January 19th at 6:00 p.m. ET at Gas South Arena.
