The Atlanta Hawks’ third-year guard, Dyson Daniels, has been recognized as the inaugural Kia Defensive Player of the Month in the Eastern Conference for his outstanding performances during October and November, the NBA announced today. In the Western Conference, San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama earned the same honor.
The 21-year-old Daniels has emerged as a defensive powerhouse, appearing in 19 games over the two months and showcasing his versatility and tenacity. He recorded an impressive 57 steals—16 more than his closest competitors, Tari Eason and Jalen Williams, who tallied 41 each. Adding to his resume, Daniels also registered 18 blocks, making him the first player since Michael Jordan in 1988 to notch at least 57 steals and 18 blocks within the first 19 games of a season. His combined 75 “stocks” (steals + blocks) led the Eastern Conference and ranked second league-wide, trailing only Wembanyama.
One of Daniels’ standout stretches came from November 8 to 15, where he achieved six or more steals in four consecutive games. This feat marked the second-longest streak of its kind since the NBA began tracking steals in 1973-74, and the longest since former Defensive Player of the Year Alvin Robertson accomplished it in 1986 with a six-game streak.
Daniels also etched his name in the record books with his historic start to the season. Through his first 10 games with the Hawks, he recorded 36 steals, tying Don Buse (1976, Indiana Pacers) for the second-most steals in a player’s first 10 games with a team, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Only Alvin Robertson, with 37 steals for the Milwaukee Bucks in 1989, managed more.
Daniels’ contributions have been instrumental in the Hawks’ strong start to the 2024-25 season, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s premier perimeter defenders. His relentless energy and ability to disrupt opposing offenses have not only garnered him individual accolades but have also elevated Atlanta’s defensive identity.
As the season progresses, Daniels will undoubtedly remain a key figure for the Hawks, striving to build on his early success and further cement his place as a cornerstone of the team’s future.
The Hawks (now 11-9) head on the road to face the Milwaukee Bucks on Dec. 4.
