Former Hawks player AJ Griffin Steps Away from NBA Career to Serve God Through Ministry

Former Atlanta Hawks forward AJ Griffin has made the decision to retire from the NBA at just 21 years old, announcing  last month that he will step away from basketball to pursue full-time ministry. Griffin, who was waived by the Houston Rockets in September 2024 after a contract buyout, said he felt called to devote his life to his Christian faith.

Drafted 16th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Hawks, Griffin showed early promise as a shooter and versatile forward. In his rookie season, he displayed flashes of his potential, particularly as a reliable outside shooter, which was one of the reasons he was highly regarded coming out of Duke University. However, his second season was marked by limited playing time due to injuries and competition for minutes, and he was eventually traded to the Houston Rockets before the 2024 season.

After being waived by the Rockets, Griffin explained that he had been feeling a deep sense of calling toward his faith for some time. In a public statement, Griffin shared that he had experienced a spiritual shift that led him to the decision. “Basketball has been a huge part of my life, but I feel that God is calling me to serve Him in a different way,” Griffin said. “I’ve been blessed with incredible opportunities in the NBA, but I now know that my purpose lies in dedicating my life to ministry and sharing my faith.”

Griffin’s commitment to Christianity had been a central part of his life throughout his basketball journey, but his decision to retire and pursue ministry full-time took many by surprise, given his youth and the potential he had shown in the NBA. Despite this, Griffin expressed peace and fulfillment in his decision, saying that he is excited to embark on this new chapter of life.

During his brief NBA career, Griffin averaged 8.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 82 games over two seasons. His best moments came during his rookie campaign with the Hawks, where he quickly became known for his shooting, knocking down 36.8% of his three-pointers. However, his opportunities were limited in his second season, and he struggled to find consistent playing time.

While Griffin’s NBA career was short, his decision to retire and fully embrace his faith serves as a unique and inspiring example of following one’s personal calling, even when it means stepping away from a promising athletic career. As he transitions into ministry, Griffin leaves behind a legacy of integrity and faithfulness, both on and off the court.
