You know when you’re watching a soccer match and there’s that one player who seems to be operating on another level? The guy who is always in the right place at the right time, scoring goal after beautiful goal. The player that you just can’t take your eyes off of because you know if you look away for even a second you’re going to miss a highlight reel moment. Well that’s Giorgos Giakoumakis for Atlanta United right now. The Greek phenom is taking MLS by storm this season, dismantling defenses left and right. His latest jaw-dropping performance, a hat trick against the New England Revolution, just earned him MLS Player of the Matchday for the second time. Get the popcorn ready because this Atlanta United matchday is going to be a show.
Giakoumakis had a historic night, netting his first MLS hat trick to lead Atlanta United to a dominate 4-1 victory over New England Revolution. The forward showed why he’s considered one of the most lethal strikers in MLS.
Within the first 10 minutes, Giakoumakis nearly opened the scoring with a curling effort that narrowly missed the far post. He made up for it just before halftime, doubling Atlanta’s lead from the penalty spot after Thiago Almada’s opener.
In the 60th minute, Giakoumakis powered home a header from Brooks Lennon’s cross for his second goal. The Revs had no answer for the Greek striker’s physicality and aerial ability in the box.
For his hat trick goal, Giakoumakis demonstrated his skill and technique. He controlled a deflected shot from a tight angle and struck a perfectly placed volley into the top corner of the net. The striker wheeled away in celebration, soaking in the applause from the packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
With his three-goal performance, Giakoumakis etched his name into Atlanta’s history books, becoming only the fifth player to score a hat trick for the club. With performances like this, Giakoumakis is cementing his status as a fan favorite and Atlanta’s new Greek hero. His eye for goal and nose for the spectacular are bringing back memories of the early Martínez era. If Giakoumakis continues terrorizing defenses in this fashion, Atlanta will be serious contenders for MLS Cup once again. The future certainly looks bright with talents like him leading the line. The league better watch out for this Greek hero. He’s coming for that Golden Boot.
Next up: Atlanta hosts Orlando City SC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, March 17.
