Falcons Elevate T.J. Yates to Passing Game Coordinator, D.J. Williams to Quarterbacks Coach

The Atlanta Falcons are reinforcing their offensive coaching staff, promoting T.J. Yates to passing game coordinator and D.J. Williams to quarterbacks coach ahead of the 2025 season. Both coaches played key roles in guiding the Falcons’ quarterback room in 2024 and will now take on elevated responsibilities as the team looks to build a more dynamic passing attack.

Continuity and Development in the QB Room

Yates and Williams worked closely with Atlanta’s quarterbacks last season, helping veteran Kirk Cousins transition into his first year with the team while also developing rookie Michael Penix Jr.Under their leadership, Cousins put up solid numbers in 14 starts, completing 66.9% of his passes for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Meanwhile, Penix showed promise in limited action, throwing for 775 yards and three touchdowns in five appearances (three starts).

Yates, who was the primary quarterbacks coach in 2024, has been with the Falcons since 2021, steadily rising through the ranks. After beginning as a passing game specialist, he spent two seasons as wide receivers coach before shifting to lead the QB room last year. His impact was particularly evident in the development of Drake London, who shattered Julio Jones’ record for most receptions (141) through a player’s first two seasons.

Williams, who served as assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024, will now take on a larger role. He previously spent five seasons with the New Orleans Saints (2019-23), where he helped guide Derek Carr to a strong first year in New Orleans, ranking top 10 in completions, touchdowns, and passer rating in 2023.

Building a Stronger Falcons Passing Attack

With these promotions, the Falcons are signaling their commitment to continuity and improvement in their passing game. Yates and Williams bring a wealth of experience in developing quarterbacks, and their familiarity with both Cousins and Penix should provide stability as Atlanta looks to take the next step offensively in 2025.

As the Falcons continue preparing for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how this revamped coaching structure enhances the team’s passing attack and accelerates the development of their quarterbacks. Most notably, Michael Penix Jr. will be at the center of attention, as the franchise’s future now rests on his young shoulders. With Yates and Williams guiding his progression, the pressure is on for Penix to take the next step and prove he can be the long-term answer under center.
