Falcons Return Home for Insane 37-34 Win Against Panthers in OT

After Falling to the Bengals 35-17 at Paycor Stadium in Week 7 on last Sunday, with Atlanta offense recording 214 total yards, including 107 rushing yards. The Falcons returned home to the Benz to take on the Panthers.

 

This is what happened….

 

At the end of the 1st quarter the Falcons was scoreless while the Panthers led by 3 points.

 

In the 2nd quarter second-year tight end Kyle Pitts gave the Falcons a 6-3 lead with a two-yard touchdown

 

Panthers D’Onta Foreman scored a touchdown.

 

 

In the final few seconds of the second half, fifth year linebacker Lorenzo Carter picked off PJ Walker pass and returned it for a 28 yard touchdown.

 

At the half the Falcons took the lead 14-10.

 

During the half longtime offensive lineman Todd McClure became the 12th member of the club’s Ring Honor. McClure played a crucial part in helping the Falcons through a tumultuous time in franchise history and was a core member of the organization’s incredible turnaround in the late 2000s. He saw the team through some of its thinnest years and was there for the greatest run in club annals. During his career, the Falcons posted five 10-win seasons, reached the postseason six times, and appeared in two conference championship games. He joins Tommy Nobis, Claude Humphrey, Jeff Van Note, Steve Bartkowski, Mike Kenn, William Andrews, Gerald Riggs, Jessie Tuggle, Deion Sanders, Warrick Dunn, and Roddy White as the newest member of the Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor.

 

 

Panthers scored a field goal to cut the deficiency to 1.

Falcons Tyler Allgier scored a 25 yard touchdown.

At the end of the 3rd the Falcons was up by 8 points.

 

In the final quarter the Panthers came back and tied the score 21-21.

Atlanta Koo kicked a field goal to break the tie 24-21.

 

Panthers D’Onta Foreman scored scored his third touchdown for the evening.

After a penalty call there was 47-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Mariota to Damiere Byrd that gave the Falcons a 30-28 lead.

 

Koo 30 yard field extended Atlanta’s lead to 34-28.

The Panthers DJ Moore scored a 62 yard touchdown and with a missed field goal the score was tied 34-34

At the end of the 4th, the score deadlock 34-34 the game went into OT.

Despite a Hail Mary, interception and missed opportunities fifth-year kicker Koo kicked the game winning field goal in OT to secure the win.

 

The Falcons are now 4-4 and first place in NFC South division.

 

“It was Liam’s [McCullough] first game-winning snap. It was awesome. It was great. Bradley [Pinion] did a great job holding. The operation was good. [The] front did a good job blocking up front and making my job easier. It was a team effort.” Koo stated.

 

On his confidence Mariota said, ““[It] feels great. Feels like it’s where it should be. This game isn’t perfect and I think sometimes throughout my career I try to be perfect, which kind of derails some of my confidence. But at the end of the day, like if I give — if I’m given the opportunity to have a ball and with the guys that we’ve got, I truly believe in them. That’s where that confidence comes from, is this group that we’ve got. As we go forward, we’ll find ways to win games, whether it’s throwing or whether it’s running. As we continue forward, it’s going to be a lot of fun to be a part of.”

 

 

“Proud of our team and the resiliency, and just want to give a lot of the credit to Steve Wilks. That’s a tough situation to be in. He’s a hell of a coach, and I can’t give Carolina enough credit. What he’s done as interim, that’s not easy. Didn’t get a real long shot in Arizona, especially. That guys is a hell of a football coach, and got to give Carolina and Steve Wilks a lot of credit.”said Arthur Smith
