Atlanta United Signs Colombian Midfielder Steven Alzate Through 2030 Season

Atlanta United announced today that the club has signed midfielder Steven Alzate from Hull City of the English Football League Championship to a contract through the 2030 season. Alzate will occupy an international roster spot pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa. He becomes Atlanta’s fourth signing during the MLS Secondary Transfer Window, which remains open through Aug. 21.

“We’re excited to sign Steven and look forward to welcoming him to the club and the city of Atlanta,” Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said. “He’s a technical midfielder, shows good quality on the ball in possession and brings experience from multiple leagues in Europe.”

The 26-year-old arrives with 200 career appearances, totaling 15 goals and 19 assists across the English Premier League, the EFL Championship, and Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League. He spent last season with Hull City, where he started 22 of his 29 appearances and provided an assist against Swansea City on Dec. 21, 2024.

Prior to joining Hull, Alzate played two seasons on loan at Standard Liege from Brighton & Hove Albion. Under Ronny Deila in 2022-2023, he contributed two goals and five assists in 24 appearances, helping the Belgian side finish sixth in the league table. He followed that campaign with one goal and four assists in 20 appearances the next season.

Alzate began his professional career with Leyton Orient, making his debut on Feb. 28, 2017, before moving to Brighton ahead of the 2017-2018 season. After featuring for Brighton’s U-21s, he spent a season on loan at Swindon Town, tallying three goals and four assists in 26 matches. Returning to Brighton in 2019, Alzate went on to make 51 First Team appearances across all competitions, including 43 in the Premier League. He made his league debut on Sept. 21, 2019, starting in a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United. His first Premier League goal came in a memorable 1-0 win at Liverpool on Feb. 3, 2021.

On the international stage, Alzate has earned seven senior caps for Colombia since debuting on Nov. 16, 2019. He last featured for Los Cafeteros in a friendly against Mexico on Sept. 28, 2022.

Atlanta United (0-2-0, 0 points) continues Leagues Cup play Wednesday, Aug. 6, when it hosts Atlas FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the club’s third and final Phase One match. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).
