ESPN has officially parted ways with Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe, ending his tenure with the network less than a year after his much-publicized move to First Take. The decision comes on the heels of Sharpe settling a civil lawsuit earlier this month, marking a turbulent stretch for the three-time Super Bowl champion.
Sharpe addressed the decision on the latest episode of his Nightcap podcast with Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.
“To get started, obviously, I’m sure everybody’s heard the news by now that I will not be returning to ESPN,” Sharpe said. “I found out this information a little earlier in the week, and really, the only thing I asked was, guys, could we wait until Monday? My brother’s going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. ..This coming out will overshadow everything that he’s worked his entire life for.”
Sharpe was visibly emotional as he explained that his greatest regret was the timing of ESPN’s announcement, which he felt overshadowed what should have been a historic and joyous moment for his brother, Sterling Sharpe, who is set to be enshrined into the Hall of Fame this week. Together, the brothers will make history as the first pair of siblings inducted in the same class.
Despite his disappointment, Sharpe emphasized that he respects ESPN’s decision and is focused on supporting his brother. “They did what they felt they needed to do. And I’m at peace with that,” he added.
Sharpe’s departure from ESPN closes a short but impactful chapter in his media career. Known for his candid takes and charismatic personality, he became one of the network’s most engaging voices on First Take. While his run at ESPN may be over, Sharpe remains active with his own digital platforms, including Club Shay Shay and Nightcap, where he continues to connect with millions of fans.
As for what’s next, Sharpe left no doubt where his priorities stand: celebrating his brother’s long-awaited Hall of Fame induction while continuing to use his own platform to speak his truth.
