ATLANTA — Atlanta United announced it has acquired attacker Leo Afonso and $225,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM) from Inter Miami CF in exchange for a 2025 international roster slot. As part of the deal, Inter Miami CF could also receive an additional $50,000 in GAM if Afonso reaches certain performance-based incentives and will collect a percentage of any future transfer involving the player.
Afonso, 24, joins Atlanta after making 18 appearances and recording two goals and an assist for Inter Miami CF across all competitions over the past two seasons. The Brazilian-American attacker was selected 32nd overall in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft and officially signed with Inter Miami on April 2, 2024. Last season, he made 11 league appearances and scored twice.
A former Inter Miami CF Academy standout, Afonso developed his game at the University of Virginia, where he scored 22 goals and added eight assists in 59 NCAA matches. Standing 5-foot-11, the São Paulo native brings technical ability, pace, and a proven scoring touch to Atlanta’s attack. He will occupy a supplemental roster spot with the club.
Atlanta United (4-11-9, 21 points) returns to action Wednesday, July 30, for its first Leagues Cup match when it hosts Club Necaxa at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the opening match of the League Phase. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, and La Mejor.
