In a season where wins have been hard to come by—just four so far—Atlanta United reminded fans they still have fight.
In front of a strong crowd of 40,409 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Five Stripes battled their way to a dramatic 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders FC, salvaging a point in the final seconds of stoppage time.
Atlanta came out with urgency, pressing high and forcing an early mistake. The breakthrough came in the 7th minute, when Seattle’s Yeimar Gómez Andrade turned the ball into his own net after sustained pressure. It wasn’t pretty, but it gave Atlanta the early edge.
The first half featured real bite from both sides. Atlanta created dangerous moments—Miguel Almirón looked lively, and Luke Brennan came inches from doubling the lead when he smashed the post in the 41st. Defensively, Derrick Williams and company held firm, matching Seattle’s physicality and surviving a flurry of set pieces.
Despite solid chances from Miranchuk, Amador, and Latte Lath, Atlanta couldn’t extend the lead before halftime. But the energy in the building was different—this team looked ready to scrap for all three points.
Then came the chaos.
Seattle pulled level in the 56th minute through Pedro de la Vega, and the visitors struck again in the 90+5th when Osaze De Rosario nodded home what looked like a gut-wrenching winner.
But Atlanta didn’t quit.
With the match slipping away, it was Alexey Miranchuk who delivered a highlight-reel equalizer in the 90+9th minute, smashing a left-footed rocket into the top corner off an assist from Almirón.
There were late pushes, a key save on Bartosz Slisz, and inspired substitutions—Brooks Lennon, Saba Lobjanidze, and Will Reilly all provided sparks.
So no, it wasn’t a win. But in a year with too few of those, this was a moment. A result that showed character. And with Leagues Cup action up next against Necaxa on July 30, it could be something to build on.
Because at this point, Atlanta isn’t just playing for the standings—they’re playing for pride, identity, and to remind fans they’re still in the fight.
