Atlanta United earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium against Austin FC, thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer from Jamal Thiaré — his first goal of the season.
Atlanta looked dangerous early, with Miguel Almirón and Alexey Miranchuk testing Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver in the opening 15 minutes. Despite several promising sequences, including a close-range attempt from Almirón following a give-and-go with Latte Lath, Atlanta couldn’t break through.
Austin responded late in the first half with two strong efforts, but veteran Brad Guzan kept the match scoreless with a pair of clutch saves.
Brandon Vazquez gave the hosts the lead in the 55th minute, curling a free kick into the top right corner after drawing a foul from Noah Cobb. But Atlanta’s response came with urgency. Head coach Ronny Deila made three quick substitutions, injecting fresh legs and energy, including Thiaré.
The payoff came in the second minute of stoppage time. Almirón found Saba Lobjanidze wide on the right, who squared the ball across the box for Thiaré to finish from close range and secure the road point.
“We had a 1-1 result in Chicago but we blew it up and lost in the end. Now, we come back again and tonight we have a totally different discipline and attitude… We need to be disciplined, we need to be organized very hard. Then we need to take our chances when we get them.” — Head Coach Ronny Deila
Up Next: Atlanta United (2-6-5, 11 points) returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, May 17 to host the Philadelphia Union at 7:30 p.m. ET.
